There are various movies that depict many different mental disorders. Some stand out as brilliant whereas others fail to grasp the issue properly. Here are some English movies which I feel portrayed mental, psychological and developmental disorders beautifully.

1. A Beautiful Mind

Based on the biography of mathematician John Nash, “A Beautiful Mind,” the movie depicts his struggle with schizophrenia. The movie traces his life from his Princeton days to marriage, a family, and finally to the diagnosis that he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.

The movie then shows the subsequent difficulties he has to face and how he tries hard to live his life as normally as he can despite his hallucinations and delusions. The movie also sheds light on the very important roles of friends and family for someone suffering from a disorder.

2. Rain Man

Starring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, this movie highlights autism. Upon learning that his father has died, Charlie goes back home where he finds out that he has an autistic older brother Raymond. To make matters more difficult, he finds out that his deceased father has left a whopping amount of his fortune to the mental institution in which Raymond stays.

Selfish Charlie takes Raymond out of the institution and travels with him across the country back to L.A. Watch to find out how their lives change during the journey.

3. I Am Sam

The movie traces the life of Sam, a man who has a developmental disability which is reflected in his intellectual capacity, that being of a young child. Upon discovering that he is the father of a little girl Lucy, he tries his best to take care of her.

However, there comes a time when both Lucy and he realize that as Lucy gets older, she is outgrowing his intellectual capabilities. Child services wish to take Lucy away from him as they feel he won’t be able to take care of her anymore.

With the help of lawyer Rita Harrison, he tries to get Lucy back. How will the fight go? Will he get his little girl back? Watch on to find out!

4. Shutter Island

Hinging more on the thriller side, Shutter Island, starring Leonardo Dicaprio and Mark Ruffalo in central roles, is based on is based on Dennis Lehane’s novel of the same name.

U.S Marshalls, Edward Daniels, and Chuck Aule travel to the mental asylum in Shutter Island in order to investigate into the case of a missing woman. Upon arrival, not all is pleasant. Interrogation of the other patients reveals strange facts.

Moreover, upon staying in the asylum, Daniels starts having painful migraines, all adding into the thrilling aspect of this movie! Is the case solved easily or are there problems along the way? Watch to discover the secrets of Shutter Island!
