Why Wanda Has Lost Her Accent Again In The Doctor Strange 2 Trailer

Wanda Maximoff’s character has reached a whole new level in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Elizabeth Olsen gave one of the most brilliant performances in the Disney+ series WandaVision. The narrative of the series has to be one of the weirdest experiences fans might have had with the characters. Wanda has officially taken her title as the Scarlet Witch in the series and fans can’t wait to see her use the newly realized powers against some of her enemies. We are going to see her in the next MCU outing that will officially start the slate of projects in 2022, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The character has gotten some serious changes in her accent over the years. Wanda has lost her accent again according to the teaser trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Why though?

Wanda Maximoff

Wanda was one of the later additions to the MCU, with her making a cameo in the post-credits scene for Captain America: Winter Soldier. This was followed by a significant appearance in the sequel to 2012’s The Avengers, Age of Ultron. The events of the movie actually show her got some major developments as she loses her brother Peter and also switch sides and join the heroes. But her narrative has had some interesting changes even after that following the tragic loss of her beloved Vision. This actually leads to her having a massive breakdown and this leads to what we get to see in the Disney+ series WandaVision.

WandaVision actually led the character to a whole new level of transformation. She is much more in control of her true powers and has also had some significant developments to her powers. The character might actually be the most powerful sorcerer in the MCU now. So much so, Doctor Strange is actually going to go to her to seek help for the multiversal chaos that he will be facing in the Multiverse of Madness. There were theories surrounding the character actually being the villain for the MCU but the teaser might have given some hint at some other development.

Wanda’s Accent

When she was first introduced into the MCU fans might have noticed she had her Sokovian accent. But later as she made appearances in the future projects her accent was seen making a certain transition over each and every project. This was even joked about in WandaVision when Agatha points that her “accent really comes and goes.” There was another reference to this when Wanda tries to point out that Evan Peters’ Quicksilver is not the right one. He responds to her with a remark regarding her accent which comes as a surprise to her.

Why Wanda Has Lost Her Accent

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Olsen actually talked about the changes to the accent of her character. About the changes in Civil War, she says,

So that started with Civil War. The Russos [directors Anthony and Joseph Russo] said, “Can she just have a softer accent, because she’s been in America, and has to have been speaking English more.” So I was like, sure.

But fans were quick to notice her character making a return to her accent in the teaser for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Olsen talked about this transition:

I do have to say that in [Wanda’s next appearance, in 2022’s] Dr. Strange [in the Multiverse of Madness], after the experience she has in WandaVision, she goes back to an accent that’s more true to her. Now that I feel a little bit more ownership of the character, I feel like she does retreat back to having this more honest expression.

Why Wanda Has Lost Her Accent

This change in her returning to her accent now has been associated with the concept of code-switching. Here a person switches their accent in order to accommodate themselves based on the conversation or situation. This is quite predominant in the case of multilingual individuals. But fans are also wondering if this switch back to her own accent could be because of a hex. When we see her break Agatha’s hex she actually returns to her Sokovian accent. This could mean that from now on her Sokovian accent will be dominant.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released in theatres worldwide on May 6.
