Here’s How One of Marvel’s Most Iconic Moments Was Changed By Avengers: Infinity War

Iconic Moments Was Changed By Avengers: Infinity War:

Right from the very beginning, Avengers: Infinity War established who’s boss. Thanos started off with his monologue, and we knew he was the real deal. That’s because he had wrecked the Asgardian vessel, laid waste to everyone & everything. We didn’t even realize that among all the rubble was Thor, lying right beneath Thanos. He had clearly taken a beating. And, in came Hulk as Thor’s last line of defense.

Avengers: Infinity War Much Stronger Film than Avengers: Endgame

Hulk was really smashing Thanos, but as it turned out, Thanos was just letting Hulk unleash a bit of his rage to check the limit of his strength. The Titan soon broke out of Hulk’s choke hold. What next? Hulk got the beating of his lifetime in less than 30 seconds. It was crazy. That was the moment we knew that Thanos isn’t someone to be trifled with.

Remember that Thor & Heimdall had a psychic connection in Ragnarok? If you watch Infinity War in slow motion, you’d realize that right after Hulk was incapacitated & Thor was all tied up, Heimdall looked at Thor. Those two seemed to have been communicating. King Thor gave Heimdall the order to summon the Bifrost with Dark Magic and send Hulk back to Earth. Thanos obviously killed him for that, but Heimdall had already accepted his fate.

Back on Earth, Hulk had landed in the Sanctum Sanctorum in New York. Upon his landing, he had turned back into Bruce Banner, and his first words were, “Thanos is coming.” This was a moment that was stripped straight out of the comics. Marvel does this quite often. They take certain iconic shots and then bring them to life on the big screen in the best way possible. The snap-in Infinity War, Cap & Tony going at each other in Civil War, Hawkeye shooting an arrow with Ant-Man on it, Hulk holding up a big clog to save Rhodey & Rocket, Spider-Man lifting debris with his body, and the list could go on and on. All these moments were taken right from the comics. They were all beautifully crafted.

But landing of Banner in the Sanctum had a bit of difference because Hulk never landed in the sanctum in the Infinity Gauntlet storyline. Instead of him, it was the Silver Surfer who crashed in as the messenger in Infinity Gauntlet #1 by Jim Starlin and George Perez. And just like the movie, Doctor Strange & Wong were there to tend to him. Upon his landing, Norrin Radd also uttered the same three words as Bruce – “Thanos is coming.” And he further went on to say: “great danger… coming this way… must be stopped! His arrival could herald the end of the universe…”

This moment was recreated to pay homage to Infinity Gauntlet, the story that Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were loosely based on. Obviously, the creatives couldn’t have used Silver Surfer because neither did they have the right to use him back in Infinity War, nor was he introduced.

In the original draft of Infinity War, it would’ve been Nova who would’ve crashed into the Sanctum instead of the Hulk. He would have arrived after Thanos would’ve wrecked Xandar. But writers Christopher Marcus & Stephen McFeely thought that it wouldn’t be okay to add a major character like Nova into the story which is supposed to be part 1 of the finale event for many of the existing characters. So, they switched it up and worked things in a way that made Banner as the warning signal. And it all worked out pretty well. Let’s see what other comic book moments the future of MCU holds for us.
