Joe & Anthony Russo, we love you for the surprise you gave us yesterday. All the talk about when the Avengers: Endgame trailer 2 would arrive was silenced with just one masterstroke as they dropped it totally unannounced. And the beauty of the trailer is that it is so vague and complex that anyone could come in with any possibility and that would actually seem fitting even though it might not be the real thing.
Some people did say that the trailer was too revealing, and that was because the Quantum Realm suits weren’t expected to be seen here. But it was obvious for Marvel to show these to us because these suits have been all over the internet for the past 2-3 months. So getting an official reveal upon them was great as well. This trailer was slow paced to maintain the darker tone, and it mostly gave us scenes which are just an extension of what we have seen before. But there were new scenes blended with those as well.
One of the most interesting feats about this trailer was the battle sequence tease. They are so well edited that we don’t really know where the Avengers are fighting and are these even the scenes from the same battles. Well, there’s a lot of conjecture surrounding this but one thing we know for sure is that Thanos was involved here, and the likes of Nebula, Captain America, War Machine & Rocket are definitely fighting Thanos.
There are different possibilities of where these fights could be happening, but the opponent is the Mad Titan. Who else will Nebula so fiercely scream at! The interesting detail to take away from this shot is that according to Kevin Feige, the marketing will not include scenes from the latter part of the film and they will be from the first act.
This inclines very well with the leaked description of the footage shown at Disney’s shareholders meet. Here’s the description:
“The footage starts out with the Avengers sitting in the room at the Avengers facility as was seen first trailer and Captain Marvel is also present along with the others (obviously). Nebula then comes out of the shadows and mentions that she thinks Thanos would go to “The Garden” after he completed his plan as this is what he used to tell her when he perfected her in the past. Rocket also says that he is tracking a similar energy signature on a nearing planet that he did when Thanos made the Snap on Earth.
Captain Marvel then takes a stand and tells the group that they need to go there, kill Thanos and use the stones to undo the Decimation. Bruce then asks her “what makes you think we’re going to win this time?” She replies “This time you’ll have me.” Rhodey then asks her “Where have you been all this time?” CM – “The other planets do not have the Avengers to save them.” We see Thor then stand up and call for his Stormbreaker. The axe whisks past Carol doesn’t even flinch. Thor says, “I like this one!”
The footage then showed Rocket, Thor, Nebula, Captain America, War Machine, and Black Widow in space while Carol is sitting in the front seat along with him. Rocket says something along the lines of, “Who has never been in space before? Raise your hand,” and that leads Steve, Nat and Rhodey to do that. He warns those 3 – “Do not puke on my ship.””
We saw a part of this description in the new trailer and with this we know that the Avengers are planning to take the fight to Thanos. So, the Captain America Shield Strapping moment, the Rocket and War Machine buddy cop moment has to be against Thanos on Titan 2, aka The Garden. And since this trailer is not giving us footage from the latter part of the movie, it makes us believe that this fight happens in the first act and the Avengers are beaten.
A plot leak described by The Cosmic Wonder also said that the Avengers would first take the fight to Thanos and lose. Since Thanos never intentionally kills anyone, he pities the Avengers who have now lost to him twice, and he sends them back to Earth.
All this assumption does make sense, and we could also say that the so called “Time-Lapse” happens after this initial defeat, or rather the second defeat. But what we don’t know here is that how do the Avengers get their asses handed to them so badly, with Captain Marvel being on their side. How strong really is Thanos even with a damaged arm and a damaged Gauntlet?
It is entirely possible that this fight takes place later on, but then where are the Quantum Realm suits? Why have the Avengers ditched them now? These Advanced tech suits have to fulfil a very special purpose and perhaps the Avengers would only use them a bit later in the movie. They wouldn’t use them in the beginning. The first loss against Thanos would help them figure out that they cannot win in an old fashioned fist fight. That is when the Quantum Realm suits come in as Tony would develop them after the first loss.
All of it has to be answered, and we will probably get the answers in the next coming days with the exclusives from the upcoming Magazine reveals. If not that, then we’d only know when the movie finally hits the theatres. What we know is that beating Thanos should really cost the Avengers everything.
They have to be broken down physically and mentally. Only then can they achieve the reversal of the snap. Also, to give the disintegrated Avengers some screen time, the snap will have to be reversed at least in the 2nd act of the film. That would mean that we will get to see more battles in the first act itself.
