10 Superpowers of Marvel’s Drax The Destroyer We Bet You Never Knew

The being known solely as Drax is one of the most awesome characters Marvel has ever adapted for the Big Screens. And when he is played by none other than the Dave Bautista, the popularity of the character skyrocketed. The MCU has a lot of characters that act more like comic relief than plot drivers. Batista’s Drax is one such character and we love him for it. We wouldn’t want him any other way. But in the comics, the stories do get a bit different.

Drax first came into the spotlight as a minor character with a grudge against Thanos in Marvel Comics. His powers were too many to count but his character arc was inconsequential in the long run. As a matter of fact, Marvel Comics creator Jim Starlin, who created Drax in the first place, wanted Drax to be a supporting character and die a quick death in a limited amount of time.

Drax struck through all odds to become a fan favorite and that is how we got Dave Bautista to play the guy in the MCU.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Drax is seen imprisoned in a deep space Super max prison facility along with the rest of the future Guardians. He bears a particular grudge against Thanos as he claims Thanos killed his family.

The comics tell a similar story with a slightly different spin. In the comics, Drax’s real name is Arthur Douglas and he was born a human. When Thanos crash-landed on Earth, Arthur Douglass and his family witnessed it. To keep their mouths shut, Thanos killed them all. Arthur’s corpse was then taken in by A’lars, the Eternals’ chief geneticist and Kronos, the Eternal God, Thanos’ father and grandfather respectively. Douglas was then transformed into Drax.

He was physically and mentally primed to kill Thanos in any way possible. His hatred for the Mad Titan along with his superpowers that were endowed on him thanks to Eternal Gene manipulation technology proved to be Thanos’ bane in the long run in the comic books when Arthur literally ripped Thanos’ heart out in one particular issue.

Without further ado, we bring you the powers and abilities of Marvel’s Drax the Destroyer we bet you never even knew existed within him…..

Flight

A flying Drax would a sight to behold. It sounds almost impossible but it actually is true. He could fly in his earliest of incarnations. Since he was a silver age character, eh had a variety of powers that made him naturally overpowered like the rest of the Silver Age superheroes of the time. He could not just fly but he could zoom past even beings like Thor and he could do that even in space!!

Green Aura

This green aura power is one of the latest additions to his current skill set which does not boast of as many impressive feats as that of his Silver Age persona. When he gets near Thanos, his body automatically starts emitting a Green Aura, which is basically a power amplifier that temporarily increases his physical prowess to God like levels.

Drax used this ability to get close to Thanos and rip his heart out. His Green Aura making him stronger, more durable and more resistant to injury. We still haven’t seen this aura anywhere else so we have to assume this Green Aura is a special kind of power. And since it activated only when Drax was near Thanos, it is basically involuntary and extremely powerful.

Psychic powers

He possessed psychic powers. To be precise, he possessed the power of telepathy and telemetry in the Silver Age. He could psychically ‘sniff’ Thanos like a bloodhound from light years away and could even communicate with his teammates like a telepath via only his mind. He does not have this ability anymore. After his body was resurrected yet again after the incredible story arc called Annihilation, Drax’s powers have decreased drastically and he is now just a fraction of his former self’s true might.

Shirtless Fighter

Ever wondered why Drax fights shirtless? The Marvel Studios are adamant to make Dave Bautista refrain from wearing a shirt while playing Drax. But it is not to make him show off his abs. Dave Bautista too is shirtless in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War.

When you see a guy as huge as Drax shirtless throughout the movie, you start to wonder if there is some reason behind it. As it turns out, there actually is a reason for Drax being Shirtless. He is imbued with a skin that is said to be the most durable in the entire universe. That’s right. Drax’s skin is actually sturdier than even the Hulk’s!!!

Energy Blasts

Cosmic Energy manipulation is reserved for only well-known superheroes like the Silver Surfer and Vulcan. Or is it? Drax, during his first iteration as the Destroyer, possessed the ability to fire concussive energy blasts from his arms. He even used it to defeat Thanos once.

Superhuman Sustenance

Drax does not need food, water or air to survive. In fact, he can actually survive in the vacuum of space. Drax’s sturdy skin coupled with his nigh invincibility along with the fact that Drax no longer even needs food or air to live makes him the ultimate Thanos killing machine.

A strength that increases with Rage much like the Hulk

It used to be one of his abilities before he was resurrected from his death during the Annihilation arc. Drax ended up losing most of his powers and had the mental capacity of a 12-year-old. He was grossly underpowered but that is not even the worst part. He once had a strength that increased with how much angry he felt just like the Hulk’s does. That ability was also shoved down the gutter.

Can sense the ‘presence’ of Thanos no matter how far he is

Drax was created by Thanos’ father and grandfather to defeat Thanos at all costs. To kill someone as elusive as the Mad Titan requires one to have the ability to track him. Thanos always manages to jump from one planet to another without anyone taking notice. Lucky for Drax, he is also endowed with a psychic sense that has imprinted on Thanos. He can track Thanos no matter how far the mad Titan is.

Precognition

Not necessarily an entire skill set but Precognition, as an ability, applies here. He can not only psychically determine where Thanos is going next but he can also deduce via sheer telepathic energy alone that who will come into physical contact with the Mad Titan in the future.

Superhuman sense of smell

Drax’s olfactory nerves are super advanced. It has evolved to the level that Drax can use it to sense the presence of Skrulls in an area or see if weapons are about to be discharged by his opponent. The Guardians of the Galaxy have used Drax’s sense of smell and relied on it to get out of numerous tricky situations.
