Here’s Why New Mutants Had To Cancel a Big Deadpool Connecting Cameo

The New Mutants will be the final movie that will arrive as a part of Fox’s X-Men Universe. Over 2 years-worth of reshoots, the movie has been made into its own separate entity. Meaning, the major plot points that were supposed to establish crossovers with the future X-Men & Deadpool movies are all gone. The original plan was for a trilogy, but director Josh Boone has confirmed that the film has now been turned into 1 solo movie. It is obvious that Disney won’t be releasing sequels to this film. Anyway, to establish a big connection, The New Mutants was initially supposed to have a Colossus cameo.

Piotr Rasputin aka Colossus is the older brother of Ilyana Rasputin aka Magik. Since Anya Taylor-Joy is playing Ilyana in the New Mutants movie, it would’ve made ample sense for Stefan Kapcic’s Colossus to have a cameo. In fact, his appearance would’ve set up the New Mutants for future appearances in the Deadpool franchise. Maybe a couple of them could’ve appeared in the X-Force movie that Fox was planning. But, the cameo had to be canceled. It was not because of the reason that you might think. These plans weren’t canceled because of Disney. Instead, the cancellation happened due to the extra CGI budget that Colossus needed.

Director Josh Boone said:

“I had early drafts. I had early drafts that had, we always loved, Knate and I loved the scene and Superman. There’s Superman three, the one where he loses his powers and goes back to Smallville. Is that one where he saves the kid from the thing going through the grass? We definitely wrote one where Ilyana was in like a field in Russia that was being tilled. And suddenly her brother comes in and you see all the armor come on him and stop the thing from running her over or whatever. We had stuff like that in earlier drafts that just got further and further away from a budget standpoint and everything else. Which is suddenly Ilyana rescued, and is Colossus’ sister.”

It’s quite sad that this cameo will not be seen in the upcoming New Mutants flick. With the love that Colossus managed to gain in the two Deadpool movies, fans would’ve certainly enjoyed his cameo in The New Mutants. But it just wasn’t meant to be. Anyway, the good thing is that the movie isn’t fully devoid of X-Men references. Director Boone has confirmed that we will be seeing a few nods to the X-Men here and there.

He continued:

“There still are references to the X-Men universe. It’s just like we made this at such a strange time in the circumstances under which we made it was strange, which was, we didn’t know there was gonna be a merger till we finished shooting. So we made the movie thinking it was the first of three. And then eventually we dovetail with [Simon Kinberg]’s X-Men movies. And eventually they’d come together like in a big Marvel type way. But you know, that’s not what happened. And it’s like, everything sort of got flipped upside down where it’s like, we had to do a really good job this last time I went into the edit, making sure it didn’t feel too much, like there were too many loose ends to be followed up on in another movie. So most of the little bit of work I did when I came back was to make sure that those tendrils were fixed.”

The New Mutants cast & director are finally ready for the film to hit theatres after dangling in production limbo.  Let’s just hope that this film will do well despite the limited release that it will get. Theatres haven’t reopened everywhere in the world, so movies like Tenet & The New Mutants will have to make do with what they get. Along with Anya Taylor-Joy, the film stars, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga, and Alice Braga. It arrives on August 28.
