This year Marvel will be completing its 10 years of glory and excellence, and the 2 upcoming movies will take the MCU even further towards progress. MCU is already the biggest brand in Hollywood and everyone wants to be a part of it nowadays.
It has an amazing track record of 0 failures on the big screen and this year will end with the MCU having 20 movies under its belt. Till now, all the Marvel movies combined have earned in excess of $14 Billion and the two Infinity War movies are expected to rake in at least $3 Billion which will make MCU the most profitable franchise of all times.
After establishing itself really well, Marvel is now opening to diversity and bringing in more creative and amazing content. 2018 started with the revolutionary Black Panther and the next year is going, to begin with, Captain Marvel. Black Panther has knocked it out of the park as the movie has become highest grossing superhero movie at US domestic box office and it just surpassed box office collections of 2011’s ‘The Avengers’.
Captain Marvel will be the first solo female Superhero led movie within the MCU. Sure DC was able to capitalize on this prospect first, but with a no-fail track record of Marvel, and every movie since the last year going $850 Million plus at the worldwide box office since 2017, Marvel has the capability of giving us an even better Superhero movie led by a female.
It’s sad that Captain Marvel won’t appear in the upcoming Avengers Infinity War, some fans are speculating that we may get a brief intro to Captain Marvel in the third act of Avengers: Infinity War or even in the post-credits scene, but Captain Marvel will first appear in her own origin story followed by Avengers 4 where she will be seen fighting alongside rest of the Avengers and Guardians to take down Thanos and Black Order for good.
At Comic-Con 2017, Feige unveiled concept art of Marvel’s Skrulls and confirmed that Kree-Skrull war will form the basis of the movie. The film is set in the 1990’s and Kree hero Mar-Vell will play an important role. Jude Law is going to be a part of the movie as well, and he is going to play the character of Mar-Vell, who would most probably be the General of the Kree Army.
The iconic Kree superhero character Mar-Vell was created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan. At the time of “Silver age” of comics, he made his debut appearance in Marvel Superheroes #12 in the year 1967. After a while, he got his own independent comic-book series in 1968. He first came to Earth as a spy, then assumed an identity of famous scientist Dr. Walter Lawson and finally became a powerful warrior which he always meant to be.
His presence on Earth could tie into the story of Captain Marvel as the decade of 1990’s has never really been explored before in the MCU. He could very well assume the identity of Dr. Walter Lawson whom he saw die tragically in a car crash on his way to Florida, and coincidentally that is where he meets Carol Danvers for the first time where she is deployed as the security chief.
Feige revealed many more details about the movie as Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury was confirmed to return for this movie and he will have his “both eyes open” as the movie will be set during the 90s. And, along with these three actors, DeWanda Wise and Ben Mendelsohn also have significant roles which are largely under wraps but some details have come out.
For quite a while, the identity of Ben Mendelsohn’s character has been clouded in secrecy but some details regarding his role have just been revealed by the new report. According to the report, Ben might be playing the dangerous villain named Yon-Rogg. He was created by veteran writer Stan Lee and artist Gene Conlan. He made his first appearance in 1967’s Marvel Super Heroes #12.
He was a military commander-in-charge of the ship known as Helion that was sent to Earth by Kree’s supreme intelligence body. His powers are quite impressive as it includes super agility, a tremendous amount of stamina, super-strength and hand-to-hand combat. Once, he attempted to sabotage Mar-Vell who was among those on the Helion in order to please Kree’s medical officer Una, which led to Mar-Vell’s fleeing to Earth where he assumed the alias of deceased Dr. Walter Lawson before he met Carol Danvers.
It is not officially confirmed yet if this is indeed the case but it makes sense to have Yon-Rogg opposite Kree warrior Mar-Vell that has been announced.
Feige shared that the Skrulls are going to be the main villains of the movie and Captain Marvel solo movie the main feature will be Kree-Skrull wars. Here’s what he said:
“With Captain Marvel, there’s so much potential in the comics and there have been so many incarnations of her powers and the characters who’ve had that mantle that we’ve been focusing in on exactly how do we tell her origin. How does it fit into the cosmic side of our universe? How does it fit into what we’re doing with the next Avengers movies? Really, the focus now is on delivering Captain Marvel, and then bringing Captain Marvel’s story into the finale of everything we’ve started thus far.”
“All of the Marvel characters have flaws to them, all of them have a deep humanity to them. With Captain Marvel, she is as powerful a character as we’ve ever put in a movie. Her powers are off the charts, and when she’s introduced, she will be by far the strongest character we’ve ever had. It’s important, then, to counterbalance that with someone who feels real. She needs to have a humanity to tap into, and Brie can do that.”
Well, there is some really good news for the fans, as along with Nick Fury, the fan-favorite Agent of SHIELD, ‘Phil Coulson’ is going to be present in this epic movie as well. Phil Coulson had a pretty significant role in Phase 1 of the MCU, and it is because of his sacrifice that the Avengers ‘Assembled’ for the first time.
He was later brought back to life on an MCU related TV Show and has been the new Director of SHIELD for 5 seasons now. Ever since Agents of SHIELD began, the fans have wanted to see the show be acknowledged in the movies more than any other MCU show, but it has not happened till now.
Well, it may not happen at all as this season is probably going to be the last one for AoS, but at least we will get to see Coulson make his very welcome return to the movies even if it were to be for a very small time.
‘Captain Marvel’ will heavily focus on the Kree-Skrull wars, so it was only obvious to see the only true Kree villain we have seen till now, to return for the movie since it is a prequel to the present MCU. So yes, Lee Pace who played The Kree Warlord ‘Ronan the Accuser’ in Guardians of the Galaxy will also be making his return in this movie.
And along with him, his very loyal Kree mercenary “Korath the Pursuer” played by Djimon Hounsou will be making his return in the movie as well. The two died towards the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but Captain Marvel being a prequel will involve them as well.
By the looks of everything, Captain Marvel seems to be one of the biggest movies Marvel is producing, and it is going to hit the theatres on March 6, 2019. Here is the official Synopsis of the movie:
“The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
