WandaVision: Is Agatha Somehow Using The Power Stone?

Warning: WandaVision Episode 7 Spoiler Ahead!

WandaVision episode 7 took the entire world by storm. A revelation that everyone was waiting for has finally been made. At long last, the Agatha Harkness revelation has been made. It only took nearly seven entire episodes to get there, but Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) finally revealed herself as the classic Marvel sorceress in the waning moments of “Breaking the Fourth Wall,” showing fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that she’s another character that dabbles in the mystic arts. As some have pointed out, Agatha’s powers are purple in nature, a reveal leading directly into a popular fan theory about the Infinity Stones potentially still being in a play. To be honest, it was one of the craziest plot twists in the entire WandaVision series.

As we’ve seen in every episode on WandaVision so far, those red powers have been directly responsible for changing reality within Westview – just like the scarlet Reality Stone. If you look at how Wanda’s (Elizabeth Olsen) powers manifest, they’re red in nature. As for Agatha’s powers, her powers are in purple. Fans believe that this could resemble the Power Stone. We’ve yet to see Agatha at full power — or even use her skillset for more than a single one-shot — but the post-credits scene could help support the theory even further. When Monica (Teyonah Parris) opens the cellar doors, you can see pulsating purple veins run alongside the mossy branches that are distributed throughout her basement. It’s almost as if, you know, her magic is powering something.

Agatha was definitely one of the most ambiguous characters in Westview, or WandaVision entirely. But this revelation that Agatha was behind all this was epic. Fans had their doubts, but the way Marvel unfolded the events was marvelous. To help support this even further, let’s take a quick look at Billy (Julian Hilliard). We’ve only very briefly seen him exhibit physical powers, during a quick blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment during Episode 6. As his brother Tommy continued to race around Westview collecting all the candy he could, Billy managed to use his powers to stop Tommy in his supersonic tracks. His powers, blue in color, could resemble the Space Stone as he was able to rip Tommy out of his run. It’s a theory that makes a decent amount of sense, especially because we know the Infinity Stones were physical manifestations of everyday energies. Even though Thanos (Josh Brolin) destroyed the Stones, he explicitly stated they were simply atomized. That means those who practice magic within the MCU could very well still the Stones’ energy to power their own spells and hexes.

Ever since Kathryn Hahn was officially cast as the curiously titled “nosy neighbor”, the internet was swamped with theories regarding her true identity. The most prevalent was that Hahn would turn out to be Agatha Harkness — a frequent foil and mentor of Wanda’s from the comics. That was only lent further credence when she was credited as Agnes, which may be an abbreviation of “ag” from Agatha and “nes” from Harkness. Such a revelation has yet to be confirmed on the show. After only two episodes, it was too early to speculate fully on some merely-glimpsed characters. That being said, there was actually a lot to be gleaned from those that were more prominent.

Another theory suggested that Westview, where Wanda and Vision are currently living, was a utopian society of witches that has been corrupted. If Agnes is indeed Agatha Harkness, there would actually be some precedent in the comics for Westview to be a magically-hidden sanctuary. Despite her youthful appearance on the show, Agatha Harkness was actually many centuries old on the page. As a result, she has witnessed and endured some of the world’s greatest atrocities. As well as the sinking of Atlantis, one of those tragic events was the Salem Witch Trials. In the wake of that brutal persecution, some witches deigned to create their own secret community. Vowing to remain permanently separate from the rest of humanity, they shielded it from view and dubbed it New Salem. That would fit with Westview’s advertising mantra of

“Home: It’s where you make it.”

Westview might have been constructed as a prison from the outset. But who would have a reason for constructing such a thing? A simple answer would be Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Given his vendetta, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that he’s been capturing witches and trapping them in a pocket-world prison. A prison that Scarlet Witch either stumbled into while working with S.W.O.R.D. to investigate an anomaly — or that she was actively, forcibly placed within. As such, Woo’s question of “who’s doing this to you?” could have a surprising answer with an already-established MCU origin.
