Matt Reeves Reveals The Plot of The Canceled Gotham PD Series for HBO Max

The Batman is clearly the success that every fan of the character had hoped it to be. Fans are analyzing the movie and each and every element of it to get a clear idea about certain elements of the movie. There are a lot of interesting teases for setting up a franchise as a lot could still be explored from the narrative we have seen so far. There are even plans for spin-off shows that are set to come out on HBO Max and they will take multiple narratives from the movie. A variety of updates have been given regarding the show that is said to be focused on Gotham City Police Department. According to Matt Reeves, there was a completely different plan for the canceled Gotham PD Series that was supposed to happen.

The Batman Spin-off Shows

Even before The Batman was released in theaters, a lot of interesting details about the movie made it to the news. Fans were excited to hear that we will get to see a lot of exciting stories from the universe of the movie being explored. HBO Max first announced the news back in 2020 that we will be getting a series that will be about the Gotham PD and nothing else was revealed regarding the series. Right after this news, Matt Reeves stated:

This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream.

While fans were wondering what aspect of the narrative it was going to explore, another detail about the series was dropped for the fans. Ed Brubaker, who wrote the Gotham Central comic-book series, gave some insight regarding the upcoming series. In an interview with Fatman Beyond, via ComicBook.com, he stated:

I was like ‘maybe they’re really going to make Gotham Central this time,’ and so I reached out to a producer who works for Matt Reeves and he says, ‘no, that’s not really Gotham Central . They’re making sure that they don’t call it Gotham Central and it’s more of a spinoff from the movie. It’s like the James Gordon show.

Matt Reeves Talks About the Canceled Gotham PD Series

The Batman director, Matt Reeves has been quite vocal about the movie as he has talked about it has a passion for the project. In an interview with ScreenRant, the director revealed the true plans for the upcoming series centered around Gotham PD. According to him:

One thing that we were going to do, that I was going to do…so there’s the Gotham Police show, that one has actually been put on hold, we’re not really doing that. The series was going to be kind of like Prince of the City where it was going to be Year One.

The series would have seen Jim Gordon coming across some of the worst cops in GCPD. Reeves further added:

Because the movie is Year Two and I wanted it to be the first appearance [of Batman], but it wasn’t going to be a Batman story. It was going to be about this corrupt cop and it was going to be about how the worst gang in Gotham were the GCPD. He was going to have crossed paths with Gordon, who would have been someone to measure him against, but it would be a battle for his soul. I loved this idea!

Canceled Gotham PD Series

It is rather exciting to see how much thinking went behind the upcoming spin-off series. Even though the director didn’t reveal much about the series, we can get a fair idea regarding the concept of the series. With multiple shows set to release, we can expect one of these actually cover the plans left out by the creators. The Batman is now playing in theaters worldwide.
