Spider-Man: No Way Home is one of the most hyped movies in the MCU as fans can’t wait to explore the entire world of this movie. The story of the movie might actually end up being something that we have never seen before in a live-action interpretation of the character. Identity is an essential part of the narrative of Spider-Man because Peter Parker is just a kid. While the movies often tend to pick some stories from the comics to interpret them, often these narratives are implemented according to the choice of the creators of the film. Now we believe that No Way Home can tell the Civil War story of Spider-Man in the correct way.
Spider-Man’s Arc in No Way Home
We were left with one of the biggest cliffhangers in MCU history at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home for the character of Spider-Man. Fans had been waiting when the story will be continued and how it will impact the future of the character in the movies. We saw Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio revealing Spider-Man’s true identity using J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson’s new channel. Not only that but Spider-Man is also revealed to be responsible for the death of Mysterio and tagged as a murderer.
Finally, we will get to see this arc being continued and we will be getting our answers regarding how Peter Parker deals with this entire circumstance in No Way Home. Here we will start with the very idea of how his identity reveal has impacted his everyday life and the people surrounding him. This will force him to make decisions that might end up being the reason that we get to see the events of the Multiverse happening. But it seems that this is the right moment to pick on a certain narrative that was never implemented on the character of Spider-Man.
The Sokovia Accords
One of the major instances from Captain America: Civil War included legislation passed by the United Nations, known as the Sokovia Accords, that served to regulate the activities of enhanced individuals of the likes of the Avengers. These accords could play a significant role now that Spider-Man has been outed as Peter Parker and the passing of Iron Man considering during the events of Civil War, Spidey was in Iron Man’s side.
We have gotten to see Peter Parker being called a menace and him being made to look like a criminal and a murder in front of the entire world. The trailers have even revealed that Peter has become wanted as public enemy number one. This could be the ideal moment for implementing the Sokovia Accords as he violated them by appearing as an unknown vigilante. It could be a part of the various charges that were levied against him considering the character didn’t appear next to Iron Man when they were signing the Accords. If he would have done that then the government would have known about his identity way before Far From Home.
Civil War Comics
In the comics, for the narrative of the Civil War, we had the Superhuman Registration Act instead of the Sokovia Accords. But one major difference was the involvement of the character of Spider-Man in the comics created by Mark Millar and Steven McNiven which was hardly seen in the movie. What we instead got to see was the introduction of Spider-Man to the MCU. The comics saw him suffer major consequences when his identity was revealed in an event with Iron Man because of the former’s initial belief in the Act and the latter being the leader in the pro-registration movement.
Civil War didn’t give us this, but it did give us a moment where Peter was slightly unmasked after being struck by Ant-Man. And the whole announcement in front of a press conference almost happened at the end of Homecoming when Tony called Peter upstate in order to publicly announce him as the newest member of the Avengers. But Peter prevented that as he denied the offer of becoming an Avenger. So, Tony and Pepper announced their wedding instead. Well, now Spider-Man’s identity has been revealed publicly and we’re going to see the next part of his story in No Way Home.
We can see these consequences play out in the movie as his identity is now revealed in Spider-Man: No Way Home and that can play a part in bringing back the evils created by Tony Stark. While he might need a pretty good lawyer to fight the charges being put against him (Jennifer Walters or Matt Murdock!!!!!) but he can sign the Accords if he wants to pay homage to Stark. This will be an interesting reference from past MCU events considering the post-Infinity Saga world has seen a lot of references to the Avengers.
Spider-Man: No Way Home will be released in theaters worldwide on December 17. It stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, J.K. Simmons, Jon Favreau, Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, Rhys Ifans, Thomas Haden Church and possibly, the previous two Spider-Men.
