How Did The Targaryen Dragons Die

Game of Thrones is popularly known as one of the most brilliantly executed TV shows that we have had in the past few decades. It is almost impossible to believe that a show based on kingdoms, dragons, and ice zombies would end up being one of the most-watched TV events. The dragons actually became one of the most important parts of the series as fans got to see brilliantly executed scenes featuring these beasts. Game of Thrones actually began in a Westeros where all the dragons had died and there was not much context given into what actually happened to these dragons. Now that we are getting to see a prequel series for Game of Thrones, fans are wondering what might have happened to these dragons. Let’s take a dive into Game of Thrones history and see how did the Targaryen Dragons die:

Game of Thrones

Daenerys Targaryen is responsible for bringing back the dragons to the world of Game of Thrones. She was gifted three eggs from Illyrio Mopatis when she got married to Khal Drogo. These events actually happen at the very beginning of the series i.e. the first episode. But it was at the end of the first season that we actually got to witness the eggs hatched in Drogo’s funeral pyre. This would end up changing the entire world of Game of Thrones as this leads to Daenerys bringing forth three baby dragons.

How did the Targaryen Dragons die

The very scene in that they emerge is actually impressive considering we get to witness Daenerys’s ability to withstand the fire. But the other big reason this scene is important is that this was the first time that Dragons appeared in this world after 100 years. These very dragons ended up becoming the biggest weapons in her arsenal as she headed to conquer Westeros and take a claim on the Iron Throne. They did prove to be some serious threats as they were almost impossible to kill. But this would change around the end of the series as we saw Viserion and Rhaegal die. This actually makes us wonder what might have caused their death in the very first place 100 years back.

What Might Have Happened To The Dragons?

The dragons were brought into Westeros when Aegon the Conqueror brought Targaryens 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones. 130 years later the events of Dance of the Dragons actually paved the way for one of the biggest conflicts in Westeros history. This was seen in the case of dragons too as both sides saw countless deaths and dragons were killed. Only four dragons were left and this could be the reason why there were no dragons left till the Daenery came into the scene.

In A Feast for Crows, we see Archmaester Marwyn tell Samwell Tarly,

Who do you think killed all the dragons the last time around? Gallant dragonslayers armed with swords? The world the Citadel is building has no place in it for sorcery or prophecy or glass candles, much less for dragons. Ask yourself why Aemon Targaryen was allowed to waste his life upon the Wall, when by rights he should have been raised to archmaester. His blood was why. He could not be trusted. No more than I can.

This actually paves the way for two possible reasons for the death of the dragons. The masters could have killed the last of the dragons. This would have been a fitting response to the events of the Dance of the Dragons they would have wanted the dragons to be dead in order to prevent some devastation. We don’t have a clear answer to the question of the fate of the dragons but it would be fair to assume that the upcoming projects might shed some light on that. The Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragons will debut on HBO sometime around this year.
