Marvel: Official Codename of Black Widow-
Black Widow is the next MCU project that is coming our way. We may get to see the first trailer of the film by the end of November or early December. We’d finally get to see a bit more from her past as the film will explore upon the origin that was set up through little flashbacks in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Joss Whedon took inspiration from Black Widow’s origin is that it is based upon Black Widow: Deadly Origin, written by Paul Cornell.
In this origin story, Russia’s Red Room program trained 28 girls as Ballet Dancers and deadly spies. The ballet dancing was supposed to be the cover for all the girls. At the graduation ceremony, everyone who passed the training would be made sterile and given the title of Black Widow. Natasha was obviously the first Black Widow, and following her was Yelena Belova.
The Red Room trains little girls in order to turn them into Black Widow’s. Well, people have been wondering why exactly the Red Room program chose this particular codename. After all, girls don’t really show a connection to the species of Spiders, i.e. Black Widow. But, the comics have revealed the true meaning of this codename.
It has been suggested that all the Red Room girls are trained as seductive assassins, and linking that with what the Black Widow spiders do, gives us the true meaning of the codename. Apparently, the Black Widow female spiders always kills the male after copulating, and that’s probably why the Red Room agents are believed to be Black Widows. But, that isn’t the case as Jody Houser’s The Web of Black Widow #1 has finally told us why the likes of Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova have been given the title of Black Widow.
This particular issue of the comic features a flashback scene where a young Natasha is standing beside her handler. The handler/headmistress is talks to a client who wishes to hire the Red Room’s services. It is then that the headmistress calls Natasha “Black Widow” and describes her “Like the deadliest of spiders, easily escaping notice. Until it is far too late.”
So, Nat and Yelena are called Black Widows because of their size and abilities. Apparently, they could cause mayhem and escape within seconds without drawing any undue attention. This concept was actually taken up in the real world in the Sicilian countryside. Back in 1999, the Mafia reportedly used to recruit & train little 11-year-old girls as agents of mayhem. Those little assassins weren’t caught until later when people actually started to figure out that little girls were behind all the deaths that were being caused.
Since this is the true meaning of Black Widow, all the girls being trained under the Red Room program would be short heighted. Even in the upcoming film, both Natasha Romanoff and Florence Pugh totally fit the bill, as both of them are short & will be portrayed as deadly assassins. It’d be interesting to see whether the film would show us any more recruits or not.
The Black Widow movie stars Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O.T. Fagbenle, Rachel Weisz & probably Jeremy Renner & Sebastian Stan. It is going to kick off the future slate on May 1.

Black Panther 2 has been scheduled for May 6, 2022.
