Movies are made across different genres like action, drama, sci-fi, horror etc. But there is one genre which is neither action/drama nor horror, it’s sometimes called as “psychological thriller”. It consists of movies that are crafted to mess with your heads and take you on an insane ride, sometimes it pays off while other times it fizzles out in the end. Here’re 20 movies that will definitely mess with your head and will leave you thinking.

Inception

Cast members of the film Inception standing on a city street in a line.

It’s a masterpiece written and directed by Christopher Nolan who is now a living legend in the world of entertainment. But this movie is not for the average movie-goer who just want to have a good time, it’s specifically designed for movie buffs who can withstand intricate plots and appreciate complex subjects like lucid dreaming. Watch it twice to get the most out of it.

2001: A Space Odyssey

An astronaut in a yellow suit walking through a circular space station corridor in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

It’s one of the most debated Stanley Kubrick films whose DNA inspired movies like Star Wars, Aliens, and Moon. It is a space exploration movie that delves with elements of evolution, war, alien life etc.

Triangle

People standing on an overturned boat waving at a large cruise ship in the film Triangle.

It is about time loops and body duplications. It asks a question to viewers – What will happen if there were multiple you’s? What will you do? Will you attack or co-exist? Don’t take this as a horror movie about a scary boat.

Eraserhead

A close up of the main character from the film Eraserhead with his signature tall hair.

It’s extremely confusing which almost laughs at audience trying to comprehend. David Lynch has a habit of making such monstrosities with provocative imagery and perplexing plot points. But don’t lose hope, its rewarding in the end.

Memento

A man holding up a polaroid photograph in a scene from the film Memento.

Another cult Nolan movie which calls for repeated viewing. Although, it’s not as complex as people think, it’s fairly confusing. Guy Pierce plays a man who has a short-term memory loss and he still wants to find who killed his wife.

Coherence

A man and a woman looking at each other in dim, warm lighting in the film Coherence.

A group of friends meets over a dinner, discuss how fucked up their lives are and then comet is about to hit the Earth. Wait, there is another house with the same people dining.

Mulholland Drive

movies

It really divides people but I would recommend you watch it. It explores so many themes designed to disorient audience’s reality. I ain’t spoiling it.

Dogtooth (Year: 2009)

It’s absolutely miserable and insignificantly incomprehensible outside of a certain context. The movie starts out in the vein of a black comedy but deviates into more profound and much more troubling themes.
