Just when fans thought Venom had taken his final bow, the symbiote is slithering back onto the big screen, because a brand new Venom movie is officially in development and Tom Hardy is involved once again, even after the trilogy seemingly wrapped up with Venom: The Last Dance.

This time, however, the return will look different, because the new project is being developed as an animated feature under Sony Pictures Animation, signaling a tonal and stylistic shift for the character while still keeping Hardy connected to the franchise in some capacity, although it has not yet been confirmed whether he will voice Eddie Brock, serve as producer, or both.

The film is being spearheaded by directing duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who recently broke out in a major way with Final Destination: Bloodlines, a horror installment that became the highest grossing entry in its long running franchise, instantly turning them into in demand genre filmmakers, and their attachment suggests that Sony may be leaning into darker, more intense storytelling even within an animated format.

A writers’ room is reportedly being assembled to begin shaping the script, which indicates that development is still in early stages, yet the fact that Sony is moving forward at all confirms that Venom remains one of their most valuable Marvel properties outside of the core Spider-Man storyline. The character has proven commercially powerful, with Hardy’s trilogy collectively performing strongly at the global box office, blending anti hero chaos with buddy comedy energy.

Venom’s cinematic journey has been unpredictable, because before Hardy embodied the character, he was portrayed by Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3, and since then the symbiote has evolved from full villain to morally complicated anti hero, earning his own standalone universe and redefining how audiences perceive the character. An animated reboot or expansion could open creative doors impossible in live action, especially when it comes to symbiote transformations and cosmic horror elements.

Sony is also building a broader animated Spider universe, with projects centered around Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk reportedly in development, raising the possibility that this Venom film could eventually intersect with that expanding animated ecosystem, especially after Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse concludes Miles Morales’ trilogy. However, there is currently no confirmation that Venom will directly connect to the Spider-Verse continuity.

The choice to bring in directors with horror credentials is particularly interesting, because Venom’s comic book roots lean heavily into body horror and psychological tension, elements that were only partially explored in the live action trilogy, and animation might allow the filmmakers to push the unsettling aspects of the symbiote mythos further while maintaining commercial appeal.

For now, there is no release date, no casting confirmations beyond Hardy’s involvement, and no official plot details, but the message is clear. Venom has not danced his last dance. Instead, he is evolving once again, this time into animated territory where the creative possibilities are nearly limitless.

Are you excited to see Venom return in animated form, and should Tom Hardy fully voice Eddie Brock again? Share your thoughts below, and stay tuned for more updates as Sony expands its Spider universe.
