Established in 1740 by the British, the city of Tirunelveli is also known as Nellai. It lies on the banks of the river Thamirabarani. The city of Tirunelveli dates back to almost 2000 years and finds mention in the chronicles dating back to the Pandyas, Cholas, Ma’bar, Vijayanagar Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Carnatic Empire, Chanda sahib and the British. - Kalakkadu Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most biologically diverse hotspots in the country. The sanctuary is home to the tiger, nilgiri langur, lion tailed macaque, gaur, sloth bear, panther, flying squirrel, pangolin, elephant and numerous varieties of plants and trees.
- Papanasam village is a picturesque little town with a temple devoted to Lord Papavinaseswarar or Lord Shiva. The town has the Papanasam dam and some very spectacular sights for a day out with family and friends.
- Kanthimathi and Nellaiappar are twin temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The temple dates back to several centuries. The temple complex has intricately carved figures and carvings. - Vettuvan Koil lies amidst ruins now, but built in the 8th and 9th century, the temple was carved out of rocks. The temple carvings and architecture reflect the southern temple style. The temple has sculptures of Vishnu, Brahma, Dakshinamoorthy and Uma Maheshwar.
