Disney is very proud of movies starring their new generation heroes. If you think about it, Doctor Strange would wasn’t as big as the other three solo films (Spider-Man, Black Panther and Captain Marvel), but it actually was the means to their success, setting a base for the new heroes. To follow that, Spider-Man: Homecoming became a great success, Black Panther shattered major records, and now Captain Marvel is also doing the same.
Captain Marvel has become the 10th Superhero movie to pass the $1 Billion mark. It currently stands at $1.038 Billion and still has some juice to go on and beat many other big name films. Till now, it has actually beaten some major franchises within a month of its release. Here are 10 major franchises (and movies) that the film has already taken down:
The Whole X-Men Franchise
One of the major competitors in the Superhero Genre for Captain Marvel was Fox’s X-Men Universe, and Captain Marvel has taken every movie out with ease. Box Office: X-Men ($296.3 Million), X2 ($407.7 Million), X-Men: The Last Stand ($459.3 Million), X-Men Origins: Wolverine ($373.0 Million), X-Men: First Class ($353.6 Million), The Wolverine ($414.8 Million), X-Men: Days of Future Past ($747.8 Million), X-Men: Apocalypse ($543.9 Million), Deadpool ($783.1 Million) and Logan ($616.8 Million).
All Spider-Man movies
Sam Raimi’s trilogy has been bludgeoned, The Amazing Spider-Man Duology has been Photon Canoned and not even MCU’s very own Spider-Man: Homecoming proved to be as lethal and profitable against MCU’s first every female led movie. Box Office: The Amazing Spider-Man ($757.9 Million), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($708.9 Million), Spider-Man ($821.7 Million), Spider-Man 2 ($783.6 Million) Spider-Man 3 ($890 Million) and Spider-Man Homecoming ($880 Million). What’s great is that the new animated movie – Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse ($374 Million) was also no match for Captain Marvel, and neither was Venom ($855 Million).
Almost the Entire Worlds of DC
Every Harry Potter Movie except Deathly Hallows Part II
The Whole Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise
Box Office: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl ($634 Million), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End ($963 Million), and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ($794 Million). Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl ($1.06 Billion) and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1.04 Billion) are still ahead of Captain Marvel, but within this month, it will certainly gross past the two.
All These Fast and Furious movies
Box Office: The Fast and the Furious ($206 Million), 2 Fast 2 Furious ($236 Million), The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift ($157 Million), Fast & Furious ($363 Million), Fast and Furious 6 ($789 Million). Captain Marvel could cannot beat the last two Fast & Furious outings, as it would require at least $500 Million more for that – The Fate of the Furious ($1.23 Billion) and Furious 7 ($1.5 Billion).
Almost all the James Bond Movies
Box Office: Dr. No ($59 Million), From Russia With Love ($78 Million), Goldfinger ($124 Million), Thunderball ($141 Million), You Only Live Twice ($111 Million), On Her Majesty’s Secret Service ($82 Million), Diamonds Are Forever ($116 Million), Live and Let Die ($161 Million), The Man with the Golden Gun ($97 Million), The Spy Who Loved Me ($185 Million), Moonraker ($210 Million), For Your Eyes Only ($195 Million), Octopussy ($187 Million), Never Say Never Again ($160 Million), A View to a Kill ($152 Million), The Living Daylights ($191 Million), Licence to Kill ($156 Million), Goldeneye ($356 Million), Tomorrow Never Dies ($339 Million), The World is Not Enough ($361 Million), Die Another Day ($431 Million), Casino Royale ($594 Million), Quantum of Solace ($591 Million) and Spectre ($879 Million).
Captain Marvel is about $70 Million short of Skyfall ($1.11 Billion), but it may actually have legs to bring in a $100 Million more at least. So this highest grossing James Bond movie will also be taken down.
All these MCU Films
Box Office: The Incredible Hulk ($263.4 Million), Captain America: The First Avenger ($370.5 Million), Thor ($449.3 Million), Ant-Man ($519.3 Million), Iron Man ($585.1 Million), Iron Man 2 ($623.9 Million), Thor: The Dark World ($644.5 Million), Doctor Strange ($677.7 Million), Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714.2 Million), Guardians of the Galaxy ($773.3 Million), Thor: Ragnarok ($850 Million), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863 Million) and Spider-Man Homecoming ($880 Million).
Captain Marvel does stand a chance to make more than Captain America: Civil War ($1.15 Billion), but it most definitely won’t be able to take down Iron Man 3 ($1.21 Billion), Black Panther ($1.3 Billion), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.4 Billion), The Avengers ($1.5 Billion) and Avengers: Infinity War ($2.048 Billion).
8/10 Star Wars Films
While the MCU hype has clearly taken over the Star Wars fandom, we just cannot cast these films out of the list because they have had a major impact upon the Box Office. Captain Marvel has managed to take down all of the original 6 Star Wars movies, and it only stands behind Episode VIII – The Last Jedi ($1.316 Billion) and Episode VII – The Force Awakens ($2.068 Billion). It is $12 million behind Rogue One as well, but the film will beat the Star Wars spin-off in no time.
Box Office – Solo: A Star Wars Story ($393 Million), Star Wars Ep. V: The Empire Strikes Back ($534 Million), Star Wars Ep. VI: Return of the Jedi ($572 Million), Star Wars Ep. II: Attack of the Clones ($656 Million), Star Wars Ep. IV: A New Hope ($786 Million), Star Wars Ep. III: Revenge of the Sith ($848 Million), Star Wars Ep. I: The Phantom Menace ($1.027 Billion) and Rogue One – A Star Wars Story ($1.049 Billion).
The Dark Knight Trilogy
Just imagine, a hero that no one had ever seen on the big screen has come in and made more than $1 Billion. Batman in his entire onscreen career has only reached up to $1.084 Billion with The Dark Knight Rises. This number will be scratched off the list soon enough, by Captain Marvel. The names that have already been beaten are Batman Begins ($374 Million), The Dark Knight ($1.004 Billion). This doesn’t mean that Captain Marvel is a better movie than The Dark Knight, but it sure does flaunt how huge the MCU is now!
Bonus – The Transformers franchise
Well, Captain Marvel hasn’t officially beaten two of the highest grossing Transformers films –Transformers: Dark of the Moon ($1.12 Billion), Transformers: Age of Extinction ($1.1 Billion), but it will do that pretty soon. The other 4 Transformers movies that Captain Marvel has beaten are: Transformers ($708 Million), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ($836 Million), Transformers: The Last Knight ($603 Million) and Bumblebee ($466 Million).
