In 2014 SDCC, WB officially kick-started DCEU with Zack Snyder as head of Dc films. In 2016, we have seen two entries from DCEU batman v superman and suicide squad. Both movies earned big money for the studio. Despite being financially successful both movies failed to impress critics, this generated major negativity around DCEU. But it seems that producers and CEO of WB are listening to fans and critics and they are willing to take steps to make DCEU critically as well as financially successful. After seeing those major steps or changes we can say that 2017 is the year when DCEU will finally shine with its true potential.
Geoff Johns Involvement
After seeing lots of negativity around BVS, officials at WB promoted chief creative officer of DC comics Geoff johns as the creative director of DCEU. Now the overall control of dc films is in hands of him. Geoff johns are veteran comic book writer who knows every pulse of dc character. Until now directors of dc films were only used to consult him over the character and creative control is in director’s hand. But from now on every decision regarding dc films will be taken by johns. He is the man who made dc successful in every other department like comics, TV series, gaming, animation and giving him overall creative control of DCEU is a smart move by WB. He is the Kevin Feige of dceu.
Producers And Officials Acknowledging The Problem
Recently DC’S previous producer Charles Roven and CEO of WB Kevin Tsujihara commented on the positive changes and highlighted the things they have done to make DCEU successful. After negative reception of BVS, they have removed creative control from the hands of Zack Snyder. They have appointed Geoff johns who is CCO of Dc comics and studios long term producer Jon berg co-run the DCEU. They also shift the tone of Dc movies to lighter tone. In past, the studio was saying that Dc movies or characters were dark and brutal but in reality, the whole Dc universe is based on optimism. When Geoff johns were appointed to take the control of DCEU, he accelerated the process reach to that optimistic part. In summer 2016, when justice league was in production, Officials at WB gave permission to media on the set of the movie, so that they can see how things are going after BVS. They have invited critics and media persons who hated and thrashed DCEU’S previous installation Batman v superman. After this set visit, every one of them left with the satisfaction that the studio is listening and acknowledging real problems behind failure and want to improve upcoming movies.
Wonder Woman’s Lasso Will Bring The Hope
It’s the first time we are getting a wonder woman movie. Trailers have highlighted the tone of the movie which seems slightly lighter than the BVS, its more optimistic tone than the darker one. Fans are already speculating that this movie will deliver us a great wonder woman story that we deserve. When Gal Gadot was cast as Amazonian princess fans were opposing the casting decision. But she proved herself as a perfect actress for playing wonder woman. She is one of the best things praised by critics in BVS. Critics and fans liked her portrayal of a warrior princess. So we can expect great things from her in the movie, also a woman who is trying to convince warner bros. to let her do a wonder woman movie for almost a decade is the director of the movie. Director patty Jenkins said, “I met with Warner Bros. right after I made Monster more than 10 years ago, and I said, ‘I want to make Wonder Woman.’ I’ve always been moved by the idea of movies that are personal but still have a huge reach. Superman had that effect on me when I was a kid — it rocked my world. That kind of movie was always the brass ring of what I wanted to do with my career”. So we can already see a great vision shaping up for the first solo outing of Amazonian princess.
Justice League Looks Great
In June 2016, Zack Snyder released first footage at Hall H of SDCC which left every person present at Hall H speechless. Internet went crazy for that exact moment generating measure hype for the movie. This small length footage highlighted tonal shift as well as we saw our favorite team assembling for the first time. From ben Affleck to Ezra miller everyone in the cast took their respective parts enthusiastically. Ezra miller’s Flash is already being called the best part of the justice league. “There’s a quality to what Ezra does that is young and fun and full of life, that’s excited about what they’re doing, that’s so in contrast to who Batman is,” Ben Affleck told a group of reporters on set. “What does Batman do around a guy who’s really excited and positive all the time? It’s not his natural state of being.” Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Aquaman looks more badass than its earlier version in comics. Gal Gadot has proved herself as perfect casting for wonder woman and ray fisher looks great as a cyborg. Fans were not happy with his CG suit in the comic-con footage, but the movie is still in post-production state and they are still working on it. Seeing all this major changes and additions we can easily say 201 is the year when DCEU will definitely shine
