Is Annalise Keating the Best Black Female lead on Television?

Annalise Keating played by Viola Davis is perhaps the best black female lead that television had ever seen. Get a taste of “How To Get Away With Murder” and you will definitely be convinced. Only Jessica Pearson from Suits could come close to her in terms of the intensity of performance.

Here are the reasons:

Bold, Brave and Beautiful:

Annalise Keating also called as Professor Keating is one of a kind. She is a criminal defense attorney who does not care if her clients are innocent or guilty. Her only motive is to ‘win’ every case. She goes to any extent to win a case. In one of the very first cases she even sabotages her secret love life to win a case. This woman is unstoppable. Every move that she takes, be it inside the courtroom, classroom or in her house shows her boldness. She is in simple terms, braveness personified.

Badass:

She is also super badass. She had a secret love life, then she sabotaged the secret love life to win a case, she actually protected the students who killed her husband, and makes her right hand Frank do all the “dirty” stuff for her. She is actually believed to be bi-sexual but still married a guy. She is the best manipulator that you can ever see. In most of the cases she represents the criminals/ people who are guilty yet find some way or the other to save them.

Out-Of-The-Box Thinker:

She has a different out of the box thinking. She always finds a way to help her clients who are mostly criminals to be proven as innocent. She thinks of all sorts of ways including illegal ways to collect evidence to discredit the evidence given against her client. In the first episode where she handles the case “The Aspirin Assassin”, the way that she teaches her students and questions them is very different and almost makes you want to choose Criminal Law course for yourself. At the end of the first episode I was convinced that I made a huge mistake by not choosing Law for my career.

The Survivor:

Towards the end of the 1st season and the beginning of the second season she is accused of killing her husband. It is about that time when she finds out that her husband was involved in an affair with one of his students and also that the student was pregnant before she was killed. During this time Sinclair, her rival. keeps digging dirt against her and tries to take her down. During all this time she has to protect her students who killed her husband, keep Rebecca’s murder as a secret from her students, she also had to frame her secret boyfriend for the murder of her husband so that her students don’t get caught. She also turns to her friend from college with whom she had an affair with (a girl) to help her secret boyfriend come out of jail and also take other cases and win them. Even though there was so much going on she won the cases that Sinclair threw against her, she protected her students, got her friend from college to win the case of her secret boyfriend and came out a warrior. Agreed that her life is a bit messed up, but she managed to keep different parts of her life separate and won in each single battle against life.
