Matilda by Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl’s storybooks brighten every child’s life. Laced with wit and clever plots, his Twits, Charlie and Willy Wonka, Fantastic Mr. Fox, BFG and countless other creations become an essential part of our existence. Matilda is the story of a young but extraordinary girl who displays amazing levels of courage and intelligence. The formation of relatable characters and believable storylines makes one feel like a character participating in the story itself. For those who prefer watching films, a lovely cinematic representation of the book is available.

Holes by Louis Sachar

This multiple award-winning novel skilfully captures the essence of childhood in the form of the adventures of Stanley Yelnats and his exploits. It introduces different coloured threads in the beginning which eventually get woven together bit by bit, creating a vibrant tapestry in the end. Also, it teaches you that if you are and overweight kid then digging holes in a desert in the sun is as good an exercise as any. Very riveting and thrilling, it is truly a page turner.

The Artemis Fowl Series by Eoin Colfer

This series revolves around a suave 12-year-old millionaire, killer machine-like butler, and exotic locales, giving us a heady cocktail of adventurous mystery. But when fairies enter the picture with Captain Holly Short and a techno-savvy paranoid centaur Foaly (who wears a tin foil cap to avoid detection), that is when it gets modified to become a gripping thriller. The goblin- dwarf war in the latter parts of this series adds to curiosity and keeps you on the edge of your seats.

The Naughtiest Girl Series by Enid Blyton

Enid Blyton’s Famous Five, Secret Seven, Malory Towers, St. Clare’s etc. constitute an inseparable part of our lives. However, one major series that will appeal to all those who love fun and are known for being notorious in school is the Naughtiest Girl Series. Revolving around the adventures of Elizabeth Allen and her temper, clever schemes, pranks and games, this series will make your sides split with laughter and teach you a lesson or two about playing practical jokes on others. Very engaging and hilarious, this is certainly a must read.
