IPL was founded by the BCCI in 2008. It is the most watched Twenty20 league in the world. Over the years, many records have been achieved. You would know most of them. Here are a few IPL stats we bet you didn’t know:
The Brand Value of IPL
In 2014, the brand value of the Indian Premier League was estimated to be around USD 7.2 billion. Whoop! You didn’t know that for sure. The broadcasting rights acquired by Sony Entertainment Television in 2008 fetched USD 1.026 billion for 10 years to the BCCI. It was also the first sporting event to be broadcasted live on YouTube, fetching millions to BCCI in terms of revenue.
Mumbai Indians are the only team to win more matches against Chennai
With a win percentage of more than 60, CSK has by far been the best team in IPL. Only Mumbai Indians have managed to win more matches against them. Out of the 23 matches played between the two sides, Mumbai has won 12 and Chennai have won 10 while 1 was washed off.
Player of the Series
Shane Watson is the only player to win this honor twice in 2008 and 2013. 3 Australians feature on the list; Shane Watson, Glenn Maxwell, and Adam Gilchrist.
Bowlers Conceding Most Sixes
This list was headed by Piyush Chawla for the past 7 years. Amit Mishra has taken over from him now, conceding 118 sixes in all compared to Chawla’s tally of 113.
Most Runs in a Season
733 runs are the highest any player has scored in a single season of IPL. Now, this figure has been achieved twice and that too in consecutive seasons, Chris Gayle in 2012 and Mike Hussey in 2013. Both scored 733 runs in total. although Hussey played a match more than Gayle.
Most Defeats
Everyone knows that CSK is the team with most wins. But only a handful know that Delhi Daredevils are the teams with a maximum of 61 defeats.
Most Ducks and 50’s
Surprised, why both of them are together. It is because they are both headed by the same player. Gautam Gambhir. He has 26 fifties and 11 ducks in the 8 seasons of IPL.
Most Runs Conceded in an Innings
The first five spots on this list have been rightfully claimed by Indian Fast Bowlers. And who leads the list? No surprises here. Ishant Sharma conceding 66 runs against CSK in 2013.
Highest Successful Run Chases
The highest successful run chase was by Rajasthan against Hyderabad in 2008. But Kings XI Punjab is the only team to overhaul a target in excess of 200 thrice in the history of the IPL. They have achieved this against Hyderabad and Chennai in 2014. Maxwell went haywire that season. And the other was against KKR in 2010.
Most Matches as an Umpire
Everyone is too focused on players that they forget the most important man on the field. The one whose decision is binding. The Umpire. Kumar Dharamsena from Sri Lanka has umpired in 74 matches in total which is the highest.
Most number of 4’s
Everyone know who heads the sixes list. But 4’s are not a bad way of scoring runs, are they? Suresh Raina heads this list with 321 fours. He has also got 150 sixes to his name.
CHRIS GAYLE
Well, Chris Gayle is not the name of any stat. If he keeps on going for the next couple of years, there will be a separate column for Chris Gayle. His achievements are:
- Highest average of 46 in the IPL
- Strike rate of 154
- Highest Score of 175
- Most numbers of 100’s scored: 5
- Most number of sixes: 230
- Second on the total run-getters list: 3199 runs
