Marvel Cinematic universe is vast and is well known for its wealth of acting talent playing superheroes and villains. The actors have surely put in a lot of hard work to justify the characters from the comic books and bring them alive onscreen to the audience in such a way that it stays in their hearts.
We could say that Marvel has successfully tapped into the genre and created a majestic universe both in terms of commercial value and in terms of doing justice to the characters. All the actors have put in their best foot forward, but there are some roles when looking back will definitely cause them to regret taking it.
Kat Dennings – Big Momma’s House 2
Her role as the Darcy Lewis in the first two Thor movies is not that great, the intent of filmmakers was just to offer some comic relief but it ended up more annoying and irritating. She is famous for her role in Two broke girls, a sitcom show where she plays Max, a waitress, and wannabe entrepreneur. But her role in Big Momma’s House 2 is abysmally weak. It is downright disappointing and clichéd performance. The movie has a 6% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Angela Bassett – Kindergarten Cop
Before playing the Queen of Wakanda in Black Panther, she played a part in Kindergarten Cop movie as an airline stewardess sharing screen with Arnold Schwarzenegger. The result was a disaster.
Brie Larson – Basmati Blues
She will be taking on the role of Captain Marvel soon and she won the Oscar for her acting in the Room. But in between her landmark roles, she did a movie called Basmati Blues which was a stinker and got released in 2018. Critics treat it as an embarrassment in her otherwise stellar career.
Cate Blanchett – Robin Hood
Mild embarrassment though, Robin hood remake in 2010 was somewhat of a failure with Russell Crowe in the lead. Her villainous role as Hela in Thor: Ragnarok had us wondering what she ever chose the role in the Ridley Scott’s embarrassment. She is the best villain of MCU till now, although Loki was pretty bad ass too.
Elizabeth Debicki – Peter Rabbit
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 actress voiced in the Peter rabbit movie for the character of Mopsy and it was slammed by the critics as there were many controversial scenes in the movie.
Elizabeth Olsen – How the West was Fun
Elizabeth Olsen plays Scarlet witch in the MCU and she has got serious acting chops as was reflected in her debut in Martha Marcy May Marlene. She has also acted in acclaimed movies like Ingrid goes west and Wind River. She is the one of the famous Olson twins’ Mary-Kate and Ashley. She played the role as the girl in the car in the movie How the West was fun which was badly received by her fans and critics.
Evangeline Lilly – The Lizzie McGuire, Freddy vs. Jason, and White Chicks
She plays the Wasp and was part of the first Ant-man movie as well. She has had a lot of small unimportant nothing roles in the above-mentioned movies. Her break came through the TV show ‘Lost’ playing Kate Austen.
Danai Gurira – Tinker Bell and The Legend of The Neverbeast
We understand, one has to pay the bills, so sometimes beside killing zombies she needed something to show to her kids, and this was one of the worst gigs she could ever have taken in her career. Another new entry into Marvel’s cinematic universe with the newly released Black Panther playing Okoye of the King’s guard she is better known for killing zombies with her sword playing Michonne in AMC’s The Walking Dead. One cannot imagine a badass like her giving voice to cartoons.
Gwyneth Paltrow – Glee
One of the first few in the Marvel universe, as she plays Pepper Potts in Iron Man, had a very embarrassing role as a CEO of the controversial new age company Goop in the TV show Glee. Although she actually got some serious acclaim for her performance, earning an Emmy nomination for the role in the first few seasons, the show went downright embarrassing since.
Miley Cyrus – Hannah Montana
Surprised to see her on the list!
She was a part of the Guardians of the Galaxy as Yondu’s original team as the voice of Mainframe and also appears in a mid-credits scene. She is famous for her role as Hanna Montana but you gotta say the movie sucked.
Rene Russo – The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle
Frigga in Thor movies, her role as Natasha is horrible and she admits to that in the movie, Does that make the embarrassment a little lower or more? She won the Razzies for this role and that is something to say for as she has won many awards for great acting over her career.
Pom Klementieff – Les Kaïra
Before she came to Hollywood and joined the cast of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ as the alien Mantis, Pom Klementieff was acting in movies in France. Not all of those films were masterpieces. Les Kaïra was one of the worst among the few she acted in, even though it minted money in France, it has an average rating in IMDB and critics rate her performance as average.
Cobie Smulders – Safe Haven
Famous for her role as Robin in How I met your mother TV Show, Cobie Smulders plays the role of Agent Maria Hill in the Avengers universe. She played the next door neighbor of the main character in a safe haven and it is safe to say that this was one of her lowest points in terms of acting. The movie was an adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel and got a 12% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Marisa Tomei – Wild Hogs
Before playing Aunt May in the latest Spiderman: Homecoming movie by Marvel, she had a role in Wild hogs a biker movie where she reached to an artistic low point but a success in terms of commercial value. Critics hated the role, the movie and it is unthinkable how it was a blockbuster at that time.
Natalie Portman – Star Wars prequel trilogy
Natalie Portman has gotten three Oscar nominations and one win in her career. Even then for a long time, it could take some serious effort to convince people that she was a good actress. She’s been doing some great work, but sadly her most iconic role is also her lousiest: Princess Padme Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy who is the love interest of the protagonist and had a very important role in the Star Wars universe. There was no way for Portman to make her awful romantic dialogues sound the least bit convincing. She co-starred in Thor alongside Chris Hemsworth.
Linda Cardellini – The Goode Family
She plays Hawkeye’s wife Laura Barton in the Avengers movies, has a lot of voice acting roles to her name. She’s done voices for some very famous hit cartoons like Regular Show, Gravity Falls. But one of the most embarrassing failures was The Goode Family. It was a mean-spirited show and did not last long.
Scarlett Johansson – Ghost in the Shell
The Black widow of the Marvel’s universe Scarlett Johansson has been an important part of the success of the Avengers movies. She has been the highest paid actress in the industry courtesy Marvel movies. She is one of the top attractions of Marvel’s first three phases. So for her to do a movie like Ghost in the Shell where she plays a Japanese woman named Motoko Kusanagi is downright embarrassing.
The excuse that was made for her to play such a role makes the whole situation bizarre and worse. The whitewashing controversy combined with bad reviews from critics led to a spectacular flop in otherwise star-studded movie career.
Michelle Yeoh – The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Michelle Yeoh’s cameo as Aleta Ogord at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 excited some fans, but her role in the third installation of Mummy was not that great.
Tessa Thompson – When a Stranger Calls
A new entry into the Marvel’s universe is Tessa Thompson who played Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok. She delivered a strong performance that was pretty intense. But before that, she played Scarlet in the 2006 remake of the cult classic ‘When a stranger calls’. Although her role is limited as she plays the friend of the lead actress playing the babysitter, she had to partake in the movie which has 8% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Zoe Saldana – Nina
Famous for playing Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy, she got into controversies with her landing the role of the famous singer and civil rights activist Nina Simone in the 2016 biopic. The reason for the controversy was that even though of black origin, her skin tone was much farther than that of Nina which raised the question of whether the casting of Zoe for the role was appropriate from the part of filmmakers.
The estate of Nina spoke out against casting Zoe as Nina. The problems were far from over as the movie got delayed by four years and had a very limited release. The movie got a dismal 2% on Rotten Tomatoes and can be named as an embarrassment to the otherwise superb career of Zoe.
