Every movie has at least a conflict, and sometimes good conflicts can be really hurting ones. Most of the times the pain is all too real. Here are some major accidents that happened on the movie sets with our favorite actors.
Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained
Leonardo DiCaprio played a role of a demented slave owner in Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 Western, and in one scene, he informs Django that he knows about his plan to free his wife. Giving emphasis on his point he slammed his fist onto a table and hits a glass in the process. But he continued his dialogue while blood was flowing.
Jennifer Lawrence in Mockingjay — Part 1
While filming a scene for “Mockingjay — Part 1”, a faulty fog machine started malfunctioning. Jennifer Lawrence was in an enclosed space and was right in front of everyone on the sets. She disappeared in the fog and it took minutes for the crew to safely draw her out. She was gasping for air and suffered from both vertigo and nausea and production was stopped until she fully recovered. Later in an interview, she said:
“I went deaf in one ear for months, I got all these ear infections from the diving and water and all that stuff, and then a jet from one of the cornucopia scenes punctured my eardrum.”
Sylvester Stallone in The Expandables
Stallone didn’t have a very close encounter with death but it was quite serious. While filming a fight scene for “The Expendables” with wrestling legend Stone Cold Steve Austin the fight went a bit too realistic and he ended up getting a hairline fracture in his neck. Later he spoke about the fight saying:
“Actually, my fight with Stone Cold Steve Austin was so vicious that I ended up getting a hairline fracture in my neck. I’m not joking. I haven’t told anyone this, but I had to have a very serious operation afterward. I now have a metal plate in my neck.”
Charlize Theron during Aeon Flux
During the days of Aeon Flux, Charlize Theron wanted to her own stunts instead of using body doubles. While performing a back-flip for a movie, it proved quite fatal for the actress as she landed awkwardly on her neck. This herniated her disc which was close to the spinal cord. The filming shut down for eight weeks and doctors were also worried that she might lose some mobility in her body. But she recovered and later decided to let the stunt doubles do their jobs. She spoke about her injury saying:
“I did a back handspring, gymnastics back handspring, had done 18 of them back to back and I just slipped and landed on my neck with my body straight out so with all my weight onto my neck and herniated the disk between my third and fourth vertebrae. I had some nerve damage, it was numb and on the right side of my body.”
Margaret Hamilton for The Wizard of Oz
All the green makeup Hamilton had to wear to portray the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz. She suffered second-degree burns on her face and hands, which stopped her from filming for six weeks to recover.
Martin Sheen for Apocalypse Now
The scene that opens the movie is probably one of the most disturbing scenes in the movie. Captain Willard, played by Martin Sheen, smashes his hand and wipes his own blood all over his face. According to the reports, Sheen was very drunk when he was shooting this scene.
Jackie Chan in Armour of God
The action superstar had a close encounter with death while he was doing a stunt for the movie “Armour of God”. He had to jump from the castle to the tree branch and he was quite comfortable in doing such stunt as had done many such stunts before but while performing the stunt he couldn’t manage to hold the branch and fell straight on the ground with his head hitting the floor. His skull not only broke but some pieces of it shot up into his brain and he was taken straight to the hospital and underwent an emergency brain surgery. The actor almost died due to this stunt and he has a plastic plate in his head.
James Franco for Pineapple Express
According to Seth Rogen’s comment to New York Magazine, James Franco had three stitches on his head while filming the movie. Franco was supposed to run into a tree, he did it with a little too much energy and hurt himself.
Viggo Mortensen for Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
When Viggo Mortensen reprised his role as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, the actor broke two of his toes in one scene after kicking a helmet, and he falls to the ground in pain.
Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 6
Tom Cruise was shooting in London where he was performing an action sequence where he was supposed to jump from a rig to a rooftop assisted by safety wires. Apparently, he made an impressive leap but couldn’t land properly, in the end, slamming into the side of a building. He then started limping and collapsed in front of the crew.
The Sun later reported:
“The injury is worse than was at first feared. Tom did serious damage and will need months to recover. He is the film’s biggest star and everything revolves around him. The movie’s bosses had no choice other than to postpone the filming.”
