5 Best Theories About MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Nowadays, it is not possible to predict anything in the MCU without going through a Marvel fan theory. Marvel is now the most popular media franchise throughout the world. It will produce lots and lots of fan speculation aimed at characters like Spider-Man and the Avengers. But there is one branch of MCU that has more scope and opportunity of bringing up more theories. This has led to a lot of Guardians of the Galaxy fan theory coming up all over social media.

There have been many theories related to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise starting from making sense of the ambiguous backstories of the central cast, to the big mysteries hidden in that galaxy not so far away. Director James Gunn has done the best job of world-building in these films. It lets fans enjoy the tantalizing feeling their speculation might actually uncover a few hidden and intentional secrets.

1. Why Groot doesn’t dance in front of Drax?

On two different occasions, we have seen Baby Groot instantly stopping his joyful dancing whenever Drax looks at him. But the reason behind this has never been revealed. According to Redditor/u/LtCommanderCarter, the reason why Groot doesn’t dance in front of Drax is Drax’s disdain for dancing and Groot doesn’t want to upset his friend. Lt Commander says:

“Groot does this because he wants Drax to love and respect him. Drax talks about his wife in GotG 2 and notes that she never danced and that was a good thing. Not giving in to the frivolity of dancing is a positive attitude in Drax’s eyes; thus Groot does not let Drax see him dance.”

2. Yondu is Mr. Blue Sky

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had a very memorable musical title sequence in cinematic history. The credits go to Electric Light Orchestra and Baby Groot. The song “Mr. Blue Sky” surely brought an up-tempo and joyful mood to the film’s opening.

According to Redditor u/Codoro, the song was selected for a deeper, story-related reason. The theory says that Yondu Udonta is “Mr. Blue Sky’ as referred to in the song. The lyrics can be specifically interpreted as a reference to Yondu’s noble sacrifice:

“Mister Blue, you did it right,

But soon comes Mister Night creepin’ over,

Now his hand is on your shoulder.

Never mind I’ll remember you this,

I’ll remember you this way.”

3. Doctor Strange helped Groot to grow up quickly

Baby Groot was loved by the audience. But most of the fans preferred the tree-like powerhouse to have more strength when he faces Thanos in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. The post-credit scenes of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 unveiled a teenage Groot. According to Redditor/u/ProxyArcane, Groot will receive a mystically advanced growth spurt, because of Doctor Strange. In his own film, Strange ends up possessing the Time Stone that has already shown the ability to speed up the aging of organics. ProxyArcane says that Strange used the Time Stone on Groot in Infinity War. It gave the Earth’s mightiest heroes a heavy-hitter in the battle against Thanos.

4. Groot’s language uses Pheromones for communicating

Groot struggles for communicating with others because according to Rocket, “he doesn’t know talking good like me and you, so his vocabulistics is limited to ‘I’ and ‘am’ and ‘Groot’. Exclusively in that order.” But Redditor/u/Mattster00 has an answer for this. It is Pheromones. If Groot was communicating partially through smell, it can explain why the only character capable of understanding him is a cybernetically-enhanced woodland creature.

There is more evidence for this theory. It can be found in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s post-credit scenes according to Redditor/u/BooRadley_. We see a teenaged version of Groot giving sass to Star-Lord. Star-Lord has suddenly gained the ability to understand his language. Like the poster points out, teenagers normally give off more pheromones in comparison to children or adults. So this language might be at the most decipherable during this stage.

5. Why Ego can’t sleep at night?

The character of Mantis is introduced as a kind of personal assistant for Ego the Living Planet. But she serves one big purpose for the nigh-omnipotent being. She helps him to sleep. According to Redditor/u/XIsACross, there is a simple reason why Ego needs help in falling asleep at night. This is because Ego is consumed by the horror of what he has done. Ego killed his own children and lovers in his quest for this purpose. But still, he is conflicted about his choice. His grandiosity is an attempt to convince himself of his rightness. This is clearly enough internal conflict to keep someone awake until the wee hours of the morning.
