Something About Harshad Mehta
Harshad Mehta aka Harshad Shantilal Mehta was an Indian stockbroker, popular in his times for his enormous wealth and for being charged with numerous financial crimes that took place during prime ministership of P.V. Narsimha Rao – 1992 securities scam.
Out of the 27 criminal charges that were levied against Harshad, only 4 could be proven in the court of law, prior to his death (by sudden heart attack) at an unexpected age of 47, back in 2001. There were allegations that Mehta applied massive stock manipulation schemes that were financially backed by worthless bank receipts, which his firm brokered for “ready forward” transactions between banks. After Mehta’s cheat game was out in public, he was convicted by the Bombay High Court along with the Supreme Court of India for playing a crucial part in a financial scandal that robbed Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) of INR 24,000 Crores. Harshad Mehta’s way of working exposed the loopholes that he benefited from by cheating the Indian banking system, Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) transaction system.
Learning a lesson, SEBI further introduced new rules to cover those loopholes. Despite all that, it is sad to say that even today, Indian banks both public and private sector are being robbed of taxpayer’s money. There is no stoppage to such innovative scams in the present we live in.
