After the massive success of Arrow and The Flash, CW network decided to launch another show “Legends of Tomorrow” which brings together a group of characters from the two marquee shows who outlived their utility on the main shows.
Captain Rip Hunter put together a team of outcasts, assassins and street criminals to save history by fixing aberrations across time. The team included the following: Sara Lance (White Canary, Daughter of Quentin Lance), Captain Cold (Snart) and Heat Wave (Rori), Ray Palmer aka The Atom, Prof. Stein and Jackson aka Firestorm, Kendra Saunders aka Hawkgirl and Carter Hall aka Hawkman. Later Nate Heywood (Steel) and Vixen also joined the team. They are not the heroes, they are the legends.
One of the strongest attributes of Legends of Tomorrow is its ability to take something absolutely crazy, mix them up with something even crazier and the result still looks amazing, whacky and ridiculous but awesome nonetheless.
The same formula has been done over and over until the show has become second to none in using it in the smaller screens. Doctor Who may have been the original time-traveling show but it was the Legends that took it to the next level.
Japanese Samurais, Futuristic dystopian societies, Future doppelgangers, extra-dimensional speed demons, immortal Egyptian warriors and medieval England and 1930’s Hollywood – the Legends have faced them all and come out unscathed.
Whacky and the Whimsical are what mark each and every Legends of Tomorrow episode. Season 1 was only the beginning. The Crazy was taken up a notch in Season 2 as the legends face the Legion of Doom – Damien Darhk, Eobard Thawn, and Malcolm Merlyn. This time the stakes are going to be exceptionally high.
The Legends’ season 3 has set the same basic premise that was in the last two. The Legends travel the time stream and into the past and the future to help save it from anomalies. Only this time, the anomalies are replaced with aberrations – time displaced objects or people that could adversely affect the major turning points and/or events in history.
The Big Bad of Season 3 is Mallus and although he has not shown himself physically this season, his henchman number one Damien Darhk and his beloved daughter have been primarily involved in instigating aberrations while the Legends try to correct them. The famous actor John Noble (Fringe TV series) has been cast to give his voice for Mallus.
And in one such mission to correct an aberration, The Legends are set to encounter a Living Legend itself. A young Barack Obama will soon appear in one of the upcoming episodes of Legends of Tomorrow.
Well not exactly him. The Former President is not set to appear as himself in the upcoming Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 episode. Rather an actor portraying a young Obama is going to appear in the episode. The Episode will take the legends to the 1970’s where Barack Obama will be a college student and will soon encounter the time traveling outcasts from the future.
This is not the first time that Barack Obama, the 44th and the First African American President of the United States of America has appeared in DC projects. In DC Rebirth, Barack Obama was seen making a guest appearance, chewing the heart out of Amanda Waller in one of the Suicide Squad issues.
But it is not just the Rebirth Initiative that has featured Obama. He has made numerous appearances even before Suicide Squad Rebirth which Obama finds quite intriguing and amusing. Fun Fact – Barack Obama is a comic book nerd. He considers Conan the Barbarian as his favorite comic book series.
Former Presidents of the USA have been featured in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow before. George Washington was once saved by the Legends from being assassinated before he became the First President of the United States of America in the episode ‘Turncoat’.
In ‘Abominations’, Ulysses S. Grant encountered the Legends when a virus outbreak in the American Civil War turned enemy soldiers into zombies.
In the Season 3 episode ‘Welcome to the Jungle’, President Lyndon B. Johnson is saved by the Legends when Gorilla Grodd planned to kill him and change the course of the Vietnam War.
This is the first time that a still living President is being featured in the show. Bill Clinton has been passively mentioned but he never got a full-fledged role like Obama is going to be. It is historic to say the least.
The said episode will see the Legends traveling to the 1970’s Los Angeles, the Occidental College to be precise. It was the school that Barack Obama was an undergrad during that time period. Shooting for the Episode will begin sometime in February which means the episode will air probably sometime around March.
Looks like the Legends will team up with Obama and help correct an aberration. We still have no plot details as to what kind of an aberration will the Legends will try correcting this time. Donald Trump, Maybe. He is the greatest aberration after all.
The world is literally at the precipice of nuclear war as US President Donald Trump is locking horns with North Korea and is tweeting about how big the size of his button is. He has fired most of his staffers who were once his cheerleaders and now say he is mentally incompetent to hold the highest office of the land. He is unhinged, narcissistic and has fascistic tendencies that must be put in check. And who better than Legends teaming up with young Obama to prevent a disaster from happening under Trump.
Here’s the official synopsis of Legends of Tomorrow season 3 in case you missed it:
“After the defeat of Eobard Thawne and his equally nefarious Legion of Doom, the Legends face a new threat created by their actions at the end of last season. In revisiting a moment in time that they had already participated in, they have essentially fractured the timeline and created anachronisms – a scattering of people, animals, and objects all across time! Our team must find a way to return all the anachronisms to their original timelines before the time stream falls apart. But before our Legends can jump back into action, Rip Hunter and his newly established Time Bureau call their methods into question. With the Time Bureau effectively the new sheriffs in town, the Legends disband – until Mick Rory discovers one of them in the middle of his well-deserved vacation in Aruba. Seeing this as an opportunity to continue their time traveling heroics, Sara wastes no time in getting the Legends back together.“
“We reunite with billionaire inventor Ray Palmer, the unconventional historian-turned-superhero Nate Heywood, and Professor Martin Stein and Jefferson “Jax” Jackson, who together form the meta-human Firestorm. Once reunited, the Legends will challenge the Time Bureau’s authority over the timeline and insist that however messy their methods may be, some problems are beyond the Bureau’s capabilities. Some problems can only be fixed by Legends”.
Legends of Tomorrow will return on February 12, 2018, on CW. Don’t miss any episode. And catch all the previous ones if you are late to the party. CHEERS!
