Woman Wanted was his second feature film as a director and his directorial career ended with this movie. The pseudonym ‘Alan Smithee’ was used instead of Kiefer Sutherland’s name.

Solar Crisis is directed by Richard C. Sarafian and was released in the year 1990. The star cast of the movie includes Charlton Heston, Annabel Schofield, Tim Matheson, Peter Boyle, and Jack Palance. A gigantic solar flare is forecasted to destroy our planet in the year 2050 and a group of astronauts is sent to deviate the path of the flare using a bomb. Ever expected the movie to be a straightforward sci-fi popcorn flick and the exact opposite happened. Even though Sarafian hated the movie, he nonetheless asked to have his name removed from the movie.
Accidental Love
Accidental Love is directed by David O. Russel and was released in the year 2015. The star cast of the movie includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Jessica Biel, James Marsden, Tracy Morgan, and Catherine Keener. Everything went miserably wrong in this critically acclaimed director’s movie. The movie faced a lot of problems during its production and it all affected the movie like anything. An edited version of the movie was released and David O. Russel wanted his name to be removed and he was credited as Stephen Greene.
Hellraiser IV: Bloodline
Hellraiser IV: Bloodline is directed by Kevin Yagher and was released in the year 1996. The star cast of the movie includes Doug Bradley, Valentina Vargas, Bruce Ramsay, Kim Myers, and Adam Scott. This movie is the fourth installment in the Hellraiser series. Before directing this film, Kevin Yagher was a successful special effects technician. He was not happy with the studio’s unnecessary interference and script changes and he finally quit the project. Joe Chappelle (uncredited) completed the rest of the film and Kevin Yagher was credited as ‘Alan Smithee’ upon his request.
Fear and Desire
Fear and Desire is directed by Stanley Kubrick and was released in the year 1953. The star cast of the movie includes Frank Silvera, Paul Mazursky, Virginia Leith, Kenneth Harp, and Stephen Colt. Kubrick is one of the greatest and most influential film directors ever in the history of world cinema. Fear and Desire was his first feature film and was much better than the directorial debut of most of the directors. But Kubrick was not completely satisfied with his work and for him, Fear and Desire was just an ‘armature film exercise’.
Batman & Robin
Batman & Robin is directed by Joel Schumacher and was released in the year 1997. The star cast of the movie includes George Clooney, Chris O’Donnell, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Uma Thurman, and Alicia Silverstone. Most the directors (including our list) blame the studio for the reason behind disowning their own projects, but Joel Schumacher is entirely different. Joel never wanted to direct a sequel film, but the studio forced him like anything and he finally directed the film. The film was panned by the critics and was a box-office failure. Joel took the full responsibility and apologized for the disappointment caused.
Fantastic Four
Fantastic Four is directed by Josh Trank and was released in the year 2015. The star cast of the movie includes Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell, and Toby Kebbell. This reboot of the 2015 film of the same name was a complete mess up. Before the release of the movie, Josh Trank sent an e-mail to the cast and crew saying that he was really happy with the finished project and it would be better than 99% of the comic book movies ever made. However, after the release of the movie, he blamed the studio for all the issues and publicly disowned (via twitter) the movie.
Dune
Dune is directed by David Lynch and was released in the year 1984. The star cast of the movie includes Kyle MacLachlan, Patrick Stewart, Francesca Annis, Sting, and Virginia Madsen. This movie is based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name. Several attempts were made to adapt the novel as a film soon after its release, but unfortunately, nothing worked out as expected. Finally, Lynch was helmed to direct the film and it was obviously a good decision. But the fact is that Lynch only had a very limited knowledge about the source material (novel) and he was also annoyed with the studio’s budgetary concerns and interference. He was really unhappy with the final product.

An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn is directed by Arthur Hiller and was released in the year 1998. The star cast of the movie includes Sylvester Stallone, Jackie Chan, Eric Idle, Ryan O’Neal, and Whoopi Goldberg. This movie was a satire and showcased the troubles and frustrations that a director has to undergo due to the interference of studios. But the funniest part is that Arthur Miller hated his film due to the studio’s re-editing and interference and finally wanted his name credited as Alan Smithee. You see the irony, don’t you?
Alien 3
Alien 3 is directed by David Fincher and was released in the year 1992. The star cast of the movie includes Sigourney Weaver, Lance Henriksen, Charles Dance, Charles S. Dutton, and Paul McGann. The first two movies in the series had a great start with the name of two prominent directors (Ridley Scott – Alien, James Cameroon – Aliens) attached to it. Alien 3 was David Fincher’s directorial debut and even he doesn’t want to remember about it. The studio interfered and micromanaged his entire work. They even cut 30 minutes of footage from the film, which according to Fincher was very crucial and they even changed his ending.
