15 Marvel and DC Characters Who Literally Became GODS

There are superheroes and then there are gods. The former are mortal beings but gods have limitless powers (although technically they can be killed). Superman has escaped death countless times but still he is not considered to be “the God” in the pantheon of gods. Here’s a list of comic-book characters who were not born into godhood but acquired the power of gods through incredible events.

Thanos:

In the Avengers: Infinity War, he would assemble the all powerful Infinity gauntlet embedded with infinity stones which would make him one of the most powerful cosmic creature (like a God) in the entire MCU. He will land on Earth to retrieve all the Infinity stones scattered in different places. Out of six, five have already been discovered and Soul stone is yet to be found. The fans believed that it was hidden somewhere in Wakanda under the protection of Black Panther but the movie had no mention whatsoever, also there was nothing in the post credits that could point to the location of last remaining Infinity gem.

It’s only in Avengers Infinity War that we will learn more about it as it would be more like a heist movie where Thanos along with his Black Order come for each and every Infinity stone. He ultimately wants to rule the cosmos and it is possible only if he controls all the elements of the world and destroy everyone and everything that come in his way. The only ones standing before him and total domination are Avengers and Guardians who will do everything possible to stop him from ending the civilization as we know it. Once heroes realize how to get rid of the cosmic cube, they will strip him of his status as the god.

Jane Foster:

In the recent Marvel comics, Jane Foster lifted Thor’s hammer Mjolnir and became the new ‘Thor’. In the MCU, the famous actress Natalie Portman played Thor’s love interest but they broke up and Portman refused to do another Marvel movie. Hence, in Thor: Ragnarok, a new character named Valkyrie who is a warrior and could become the female Thor in the future.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige has not ruled out the idea of a female Thor and had this to say:

“We always look back to the comics to get those ideas … sometimes very specific storylines like Civil War, sometimes just nuggets or characters like Planet Hulk. So anything that’s happened in the comics, even a female Thor, become great potentials and the ideas from which future movies can be born.”

Galactus:

He was once a humble explorer named Galan but then he emerged as one of the most powerful cosmic creatures in the entire comic-book universe. He is sometimes known as “Devourer of Worlds”. He was born out of the destruction of a previous universe, there aren’t many who can stop him, let alone beat him. In fact, Stan Lee also said that Galactus is certainly the most powerful character in the Marvel universe. He is a God who can access limitless energy which allows him to create quantum tunnels, transmute matter and a form of omniscience.

Dr. Manhattan:

He recently became part of the DC universe. Due to a mishap in the experiment, he became impervious to death (like Gods). He could clone himself and grow to enormous heights.

The Flash:

In the comics, he gained control of title of God of Death which Black Racer had it, he could defy time-space continuum, now he can even control death. In DCEU or CW’s ‘The Flash’, Barry Allen is fighting crime and metahumans in Central City and occasionally helping out Justice League to take down a major supervillain known as Steppenwolf. He has to sort out many things before he could enter into major leagues and assume the powers and abilities of a god.

Spawn:

He is the embodiment of 1990’s comic-book anti-hero. He gained enormous powers when he struck a deal with demon in hell. In Spawn: Armageddon, he was raised by Mother of Everything after God and Satan destroyed most of the Earth, he ate fruit from Tree of life in the Garden of Eden and then defeated God and Satan and became God himself.

Dark Seid:

In the New 52, he acquired the powers of gods of apokolips after killing them one by one when they were vulnerable. In DCEU, the treatment meted out to one of the greatest supervillains that we have ever seen has infact offended DC fans as he was supposed to be the main villain of Justice League, instead makers put him in the back burner and created a movie around Steppenwolf who turned out be a weak villain and did not pose a formidable threat for the JL. Fans then thought perhaps Dark Seid is reserved for the sequel to Justice League but it seems that once again fans will feel betrayed as DC has teased ‘The Injustice League’ for the follow up movie.

Batman:

He hangs around with gods, but he once usurped the God of Knowledge (Metron) and takes the title to himself, sat on his chair and validated two major mysteries, firstly it was Joe Chill who killed his parents and secondly the true identity of the Joker which revealed that there is one more than one Joker. There is a reason why people with superpowers are shit scared of Batman who is just a human but highly intelligent and ruthless superhero who adapts himself to the new environments pretty quickly.

Joker:

He is the most iconic villain of DC comics. In the Emperor Joker plot, he stole godhood by his diabolical plan and tricked Mister Mxyzptlk into giving him 99.9% of reality-warping abilities. He wasted no time and started torturing Justice League member psychologically where they are now villains of the world. In the end, his own insanity swallowed him.

Kyle Rayner:

The Green Lantern Corps is one the most powerful force in the DC universe. Their power rings allows them to transmute willpower (Ion is the cosmic embodiment of willpower), access to unlimited source of energy which grants god-like powers to them. Kyle Rayner once absorbed the powers of all the members and his first act was to recreate Guardians of the Universe.

Shazam:

In the aftermath of death of Dark Seid, he also gained insane powers and became “God of Gods” as he attained a whole new pantheon of gods.

Jean Grey:

In the Dark Phoenix storyline, the actual Jean transformed into a cosmic god while her clone died a horrible death. She merged with Phoenix force, could hold entire timelines in her hands and destroyed Apocalypse. The next X-Men movie is adapting ‘Dark Phoenix’ plot written by Chris Claremont and John Byrne. Here is what they  said at the time:

“Our intent was to create an X-Men analog, if you will, to Thor – someone who was essentially the first female cosmic hero. We thought at the time we could integrate her into the book as well as Thor had been integrated into the Avengers.”

It will be directed by Simon Kinberg and he intends to demonstrate the whole range of Phoenix powers that are limitless and uncontrollable. Well, this suggests that major mutant character (s) are going to die for sure.

Franklin Richards:

He is the son of Reed (Mister Fantastic) and Susan Richards (Invisible Woman). He is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel universe. He can warp reality at his will. He could repair dying stars. He killed a celestial with a punch and restored Galactus. He made him his herald to do his bidding.

Dr. Doom:

He claimed the powers of “The Beyonders” and for a brief time, he was the undisputed leader of the world.

Lex Luthor:

gods

He became the “God of Apokolips” after Dark Seid’s death, and suddenly he was an equal to his enemy Superman. He is the most conniving and dangerous enemy that Superman and Justice League has ever encountered. He is not just a billionaire but a billionaire with a master brain. But again Jesse Eisenberg portrayal of Luthor in DCEU is far below expectations and yet another cult villain has been wasted.
