The X-Men franchise has really come a long way from the original cast of Bryan Singer’s X-Men movies to Wolverine bidding adieu to the fans in Logan. He came back with X-Men: First Class where we saw the younger versions of famous mutants comprising a new X-Men core team. It came after Brett Ratner disappointed hardcore X-Men fans with X-Men: The Last Stand as he messed up the timeline which was later fixed in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Subsequently, X-Men Apocalypse was also directed by Bryan Singer but he couldn’t recreate the magic of the past movies. Apparently, we see the usual which we have already seen in previous X-Men movies – Apocalypse (an ancient creature played by Oscar Isaac) who was the most powerful and the first ever Mutant to have walked the Earth is now set to unleash the wrath, calls for a new world order, invite mutants who believe that Prof. Xavier has failed them. He has amassed an army of mutants for thousands of years.
On the other hand, we see a bunch of Mutants led by Mystique (played by Jennifer Lawrence) preparing new recruits for the inevitable war to save the mankind. The movie also ran into a major controversy when a billboard which depicts the mighty villain Apocalypse choking Mystique in a brutal way.
Fox released an official apology in a statement – “In our enthusiasm to show the villainy of the character Apocalypse we didn’t immediately recognize the upsetting connotation of this image in print form. Once we realized how insensitive it was, we quickly took steps to remove those materials. We apologize for our actions and would never condone violence against women.”
The latest movie related to X-Men universe was Logan. The story of Logan was set up in 2029 which is way past 2024, the year mentioned in the epilogue scene of X-Men: Days of Future Past.
In this way, it was fairly disconnected from the X-Men universe, but there were easter-eggs in the movie which connects it with the X-Men franchise.
The fact that Logan kept a metal bullet made of adamantium, which is the only weapon that can kill him. It played a significant role in X-Men: Origins where he was shot by an adamantium bullet which erased his memory of life. The cyborg supervillain Donald Pierce (the name is taken directly from X-Men comics) who is running a unit of criminal cyborgs hell-bent on mutant’s blood. His business card revealed that he works for a company called Transigen.
Further, Donald Pierce appeared as a high-ranking member of Hellfire Club of Emma Frost and Sebastian Shaw (the villains of X-Men: First Class). Prof. Charles Xavier mentioned to Logan there is a meet-up planned at the Statue of Liberty, Logan replied it was a long time ago. This is a reference to the original movie when Logan experienced a victory with friends by his side.
We know that Wolverine and Jean Grey have had an intense affair in X-Men movies, but Halle Berry recently made a shocking revelation that Storm and Wolverine were secret lovers and hooking up with each other. It is not just a theory concocted by a fan, Berry revealed in an interview with EW and this is what she said:
“Storm and Logan used to be lovers. It’s true. Storm and Logan had a thing. I joke in the movies, I’m like, ‘How come nobody’s loving on Storm.’ Like what’s wrong with Storm? Nobody is checking for Storm. So, we decided that Storm and Logan had a thing, and then Jean came and messed that up. When he really decided that Jean Grey was his love that caused a problem…he was having two girls at once thing, that didn’t work for…that doesn’t work for Storm.”
It may come across as a shock to people but there were clues and hints all over the X-Men movies. For instance, there was a whole sequence in X2 where Mystique transformed herself into Storm and trying to seduce Wolverine and he is into her.
Another huge hint about the relationship between Wolverine and Storm came in the form of a deleted scene in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, where Logan is seen giving Storm a passionate kiss before he travels back in time to save the world and mutant tribe. And it is no surprise that Jean Grey was responsible for ending their relationship and took Wolverine away from Storm.
Logan has been super into Jean but he was always jealous of Cyclops for being the one who actually won Jean’s heart and became her lover. This created a wedge between them from time to time in X-Men movies and comics. It’s tragic that Storm was pushed by the wayside while Wolverine pretended to love Jean who actually loves Cyclops.
Well, the next X-Men movie Dark Phoenix will only have dark stuff to deal with.
