Mankind has always found the idea of artificial intelligence fascinating and intriguing. The scientific community has been working for a long time to produce a conscious machine with an array of human emotions. The Hollywood has tried its best to portray an ‘AI’ on a big screen. Here are the fifteen best ‘AI’ based films of all time:
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001):
In this bold & ambitious project, Steven Spielberg for the first time introduced the audience to the “thinking machine” in the form of a boy who has human feelings for his mother. The audience was awestruck by the depiction of an ‘AI’ onscreen and critics too acclaimed the movie at different forums.
Ex-Machina (2015):
Most of the people would be unaware of this project as its made on a small budget, had a limited release in few countries and theaters, but in my view, this little ‘AI’ flick pushed the boundaries of scientific imagination. It was neither didactic nor too “hot on high-level abstraction”. This is a brilliant piece of work by writer-director Alex Garland.
The Matrix (1999):
Who doesn’t feel inspired by the “bullet stopping” scene when Neo realized that he is the chosen one. The protagonist has to fight against the powerful supercomputer artificial programs who are determined to annihilate human civilization. The Wachowski brothers brought this gem based on ‘AI’ in the late 1990’s which got Keano Reeves his first ever Oscar in the “Best Actor” category.
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015):
There was a massive expectation from the sequel to “The Avengers”, and the Marvel Studios decided to go with an ‘AI’ villain namely Ultron. It was developed by Tony Stark (Ironman) to create a “suit of armor” around the world, but it turned rogue and became a threat to the very existence of humankind.
I, Robot (2004):
It’a futuristic movie set in a dystopian world where robots are employed by humans in their factories. They are governed by three laws of robotics until an investigator may have discovered a breach. It added a unique dimension to the treatment of an ‘AI’ character.
Blade Runner (1982)
Directed by Ridley Scott. It’s a cinematic masterpiece in the sci-fi genre. The story revolves around a blade-runner who must terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have now returned to earth. The upcoming movie Blade Runner 2049 starring Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling seeks to recreate the old magic.
T2: The Judgement Day (1991)
If Terminator 1 marked the birth of a major sci-fi franchise which turned Arnold Schwarzenegger into a famous actor. Terminator 2 catapulted him to global fame. No one could have thought that the sequel would outperform the original, but it did.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
The whole movie will make you intrigued, startled, and very uncomfortable. So, in a nutshell, the movie will absolutely mess with your mind, body, and soul.
RoboCop (1987)
The movie is about a police officer who got murdered by a gang of criminals but revived by malevolent mega-corporation Omni Consumer Products and got transformed into a potent cyborg.
The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951)
Although a reboot was made starring Keanu Reeves the original was a just class apart. In this classic sci-fi saga, an alien Klaatu visits Earth with a super-robot Gort carrying a warning for the humans to either live peacefully or be destroyed as they are a threat to other forms of life.
Metropolis (1927)
It is one of Fritz Lang’s best sci-fi work which heavily influenced Blade Runner later on. The story is just insane and quite complicated but lets me try…there is a robot double of a peasant girl in Berlin 2026 which unleashes chaos among city workers but is burnt at the stake as a witch.
Interstellar (2014)
This is one of the best works of Christopher Nolan as he explores complex themes like space exploration, fifth dimension etc. But like all his movies, it was also grounded as it showcased father-daughter deep bond which will hit you on a visceral level. McConaughey truly delivered one of his best performances ever.
The Machine (2013)
In the futuristic world, a computer scientist Toby Stephens develops a full conscious, self-aware robot which will be used as a super-soldier against the Chinese but turns out it is more moral and human than one can imagine. The machine tells its creator: “I am part of a new world, you are part of old.”
Star Wars Series
The two androids R2D2 and C-3PO played an instrumental role in George Lucas’s space opera. The golden droid says to R2D2 “Don’t call me a mindless philosopher, you overweight glob of grease”. Both of them have appeared in all the Star Wars movies till now.
Star Trek Series
The world is divided into two groups: Star War fans and Star Trek fans, I am in a second camp. Many films and TV series have been made on Star Trek saga which chronicles the space adventures of Captain Kirk, Captain Spock and the team on a Starship Enterprise. There is an android with a positronic brain with an emotion chip. He has a cat called Spot.
