Harry Potter is a series that has always kept its readers on edge with its thrilling story and plot twists from time to time. There are moments that will melt your heart, moments that make you laugh and then there are moments that make us go “whaaaaaaaaaaat!!!???!!!”
Let us take a look at five such amazing plot twists in the Harry Potter saga that changed the course of the series:
7. Scabbers was Wormtail:
POA is one of the most thrilling books of the series as it has the best suspense and twists in it. So throughout the book, we are made to believe that Sirius Black is a mass murderer who is after Harry’s life and who serves the dark lord. In the end, we get to know that Sirius Black is actually Harry’s Godfather and he never committed the crimes he was imprisoned for. Peter Pettigrew was alive all this time and was living a secret life as a rat named Scabbers owner by Ron Weasley.
6. Neville could be the chosen one!
According to the prophecy in OOTP we get to know that the chosen one would have a certain set of traits such as he would be born at the end of July, to parents who have escaped Voldemort thrice and Voldemort would mark him as his equal.
The first two traits of the prophecy were fulfilled by two boys that are Harry and Neville Longbottom! Then why did Harry become the chosen one? The reason for this is the third requirement that says that Voldemort would mark him as his equal. Harry and Voldemort were both half-bloods whereas Neville is a pureblood wizard. This is said to be the reason that Voldemort chooses Harry as his rival and what makes him the chosen one.
5. R.A.B and the locket:
At the end of HBP, we find out that the locket that Dumbledore and Harry Potter struggled so hard to find was actually a fake! This was such a shocker especially after what Dumbledore went through in that cave.
The real locket was found many years ago by a person with the initials R.A.B and he replaced it with a fake one. He put a note in the fake one saying that he has stolen the real locket and intends to destroy it. But the question remained…did he destroy it?
4. R.A.B was Sirius’s brother:
In the last book, we find out that R.A.B stands for Regulus Arcturus Black who was actually Sirius’s brother and a former death eater. We get to know more about him and his failed attempt to destroy the real Horcrux.
Also, Kreacher plays a huge role in this as he accompanied Regulus to that cave and later tried hard to destroy the locket.
3. The identity of the Half-Blood Prince:
One of the most iconic moments of the series is when Snape reveals that he was actually the Half-blood prince. Harry had been using Snape’s potion’s textbook all year and had achieved great success with the help of his notes. He had started admiring the Half blood prince and was fascinated by him.
In the end of the book, however, he finds out that his potions master, Severus Snape was actually the man behind the mysterious title.
2. Narcissa lies to Voldemort and saves Harry Potter:
This is probably one of the best moments in the entire series though it is often overlooked. After Voldemort tried to kill Harry he asked whether he was dead or not. Narcissa Malfoy checked and found out that he was actually alive. She asked Harry whether Draco is alive or not. When Harry replies that Draco is alive, Narcissa could have told Voldemort that Harry was breathing but instead she says “he is dead”!
There are different theories as to why Narcissa would save Harry and betray Voldemort. One of them is that Narcissa wanted to return to the castle to look for Draco and the only way would be to be a part of Voldemort’s conquering army. Another is that she really wanted Voldemort dead because she knew her family would never be safe with him alive. Also, some believe that she did not wish for Harry to die because she was a mother herself and this theory would make the story come full circle as Voldemort would be defeated twice by a mother’s love that saves Harry. We can believe any reason we like and this moment will still be one of the best plot twists of the series.
1. Harry Potter was the last Horcrux:
This has to take the number one spot on our list because it was definitely one of the best plot twists. Some fans would say that they saw this coming from quite some time but that doesn’t make this any less awesome. JKR’s writing includes several points that come full circle and loose ends that are tired in the end and this has to be the best of them.
So the night Voldemort went to Godric’s Hollow to kill Harry and was defeated by Lily’s sacrifice, he made an unintentional Horcrux. The part of his soul that leaves his body that night finds refuge in his arch-enemy instead. Harry was the last Horcrux that even Voldemort did not know about. Voldemort kills this Horcrux himself which means he kills a part of his own soul making him his own death (poetic isn’t it?).
