Wonder Woman was carrying a lot of hopes, prayers, and wishes of DC fans after a series of setbacks at the box-office, but they have a reason to cheer now as the movie has delivered big for DCEU. It is directed by Patty Jenkins, the first woman to direct a DC film with a screenplay written by Allan Heinberg, story by Heinberg, Snyder, and Fuchs.
It explores the origins of Wonder Woman, from being Diana on the island of Themyscira to saving American pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) who crashed his plane offshore, ultimately leading her to end World War I. The film has not just smashed box-office records but also a glass ceiling for women.
Wonder Woman broke the record of biggest opening weekend collections for a female directed live-action movie. The film also has Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Elena Anaya as supporting cast.
At the worldwide box-office, Wonder Woman is poised to hit the Billion dollar mark as it has already crossed $700 million while playing in just 40 countries in 6 week time. It’s been just six weeks of release for the film and it has already crossed Man of Steel, Suicide Squad, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
This means that when all is said and done, Wonder Woman will be the highest grossing DCEU movie. It is now poised to cross a Billion dollar mark. In fact, the biggest Marvel stars are gushing all over, showering praise on the movie left and right.
Wonder Woman is the biggest summer blockbuster and Warner Bros. have truly arrived at the superhero scene (although they should have with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice but better late than never). The studio believes it deserves honors and recognitions for their effort and may be some Oscar love as well.
According to reports from Variety, the studio is planning a massive PR campaign to get Wonder Woman nominated in the “Best Picture” category and Petty Jenkins nominated for “Best Director” category. Most of the superhero movie makers feel it’s a fool’s errand to chase Oscars for their work as the jury is disinterested. But industry analysts feel this could be the money well-spent.
Wonder Woman has all the makings of a movie which should be nominated whether its critical acclaim from across the board, financial success at the global box-office, female-led superhero movie becoming second highest grossing trailing Beauty and the Beast or Rotten Tomatoes rankings.
It seems it has serious shot at the Oscars, the only other woman who actually won was Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker” and it was not a superhero movie.
Gal Gadot will be next seen in the Justice League movie which has a strong ensemble cast including Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder-woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Mamoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher).
The movie is directed by Zack Snyder. The story of Justice League will follow the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and mark the Phase 1 of DC Cinematic Universe.
At the end of the Batman v Superman, the Man of Steel was dead, while Batman and Wonder Woman had begun to assemble the Justice League, an elite team of superheroes to fight a supervillain Steppenwolf who has been awakened in the wake of events.
The Steppenwolf is basically the military general of Darkseid who have sent parademons to interrogate/kidnap Batman and Earth’s scientists to retrieve Apokoliptian Motherbox which is the most powerful object in the realm.
When Warner Bros. dropped the full-length trailer of the Justice League, it set the internet on fire. The DC fans are pumped and thrilled to see their favorite superheroes on a big-screen. The massive reception that the first trailer received has injected new life into DCEU, many are even saying that with this kind of hype the movie may break the box-office records of “The Avengers”.
The sequel to Wonder Woman has been greenlit by Warner Bros. and both Patty Jenkins (the director) and Gal Gadot would be returning. There is a possibility of a cameo by Lynda Carter in the sequel and talks are underway to make it happen. Carter is all praise for Petty Jenkins, she said:
“We were trying to get me in the first one and we couldn’t make it work with our timing… It really is up to Patty, and if it works in an organic way it’ll be great fun and it’ll be wonderful to do. Am I open to it? Absolutely. I ADORE Patty Jenkins, and it’ll be wonderful to do. But we’ll just see how it goes.”
She added:
“I was so taken with the both of them, and taken with Patty from the beginning when she very first got this film, and we talked on the phone. I just said that she knows who this character is. Because Wonder Woman, it’s the idea of her. It’s not about superpowers, it’s about her intellect and compassion. It’s so much more than some comic book character, because we identify with it.”
