5 Comic-Book Facts That Every DC Fan Should Know About SHAZAM

We all know that Shazam movie is in the development stage at WB studio, with the rock as Black Adam. But for some non-comic book fans who doesn’t know anything about Shazam, some questions will arise in their mind like who is Shazam? How he got his powers? Why is Black Adam his enemy? And what the hell SHAZAM means. Here is a list of some facts about Shazam one should know before watching the movie.

Who is Shazam?

5 Comic-Book Facts That Every DC Fan Should Know About SHAZAM

Billy Batson, a 16 years old young boy chosen to be worthy of the power of six god-like figures by an ancient wizard. Whenever Billy speaks SHAZAM word aloud a lightning bolt comes out of the sky and strikes him, which transforms him into Shazam. He has to repeat those word again to Become Billy again. Warner Bros. didn’t cast anybody for this role but they should get somebody who can give that childish angle to the character, as Shazam’s alter ego is just a 16 years old boy.

What SHAZAM means?

SHAZAM is not just a name of a superhero it’s an acronym, in which every character indicates powers of him. ‘S’ stands for the wisdom of Solomon-which gives him counsel and helps him in fast decision making in tight places. ‘H’ stands for the strength of Hercules- which gives him strength and power of god level and with this power he can match the strength of superman. ’A’ stands for- the Stamina of Atlas- which gives him a vulnerability and immense stamina and also healing power. The stamina of Atlas also prevents him from getting tired and provides him with a supernaturally endowed metabolism preventing fatigue, thirst, and hunger. ‘Z’ stands for the power of Zeus- Apart from fueling the thunderbolt which transforms billy into shazam, it also gives him resistance against magical powers and spells. Also, Shazam can shoot thunderbolts at his enemies to make them weak. ‘A’ stands for- the courage of Achilles-This gives him the courage and bravery of the legendary Greek hero. This magic stems from the Styx, bestowing him with an omnipresent presence of good will and inner harmony that protects him from doubt, purifies him by giving him resistant to intimidation or forces of personality, and comforts him even in the most hopeless of times. ‘M’ stands for-The speed of Mercury-Because of this power he can fly and can run at superhuman speed.

His Arch-enemy

Recently, it was revealed that studio is opting for Standalone Black Adam movie with the rock as black Adam before Shazam. It’s a good thing actually as Black Adam has a rich history and it will be exciting to see how he becomes corrupt as he was the first choice of the wizard, who give him powers of shazam as he is worthy of it. We have seen so many superhero movies recently where villains are just want to do bad things so that they can help in main heroes development. But seeing a guy worthy of that mighty power at start, who becomes corrupt at the end of a movie, which will explore villain’s side of the story is a nice thing, as it will lead towards setting the stage for Shazam movie.

Legal Controversies

Shazam is the most legally controversial character in the history of comic books. In 1941 DC filed a lawsuit against Fawcett comic for character infringement. They stated that his power are equal to that of Superman’s and he was a complete rip off of him. Which is true because shazam is like superman with magical powers. DC won the case against Fawcett comics and also got the rights to the character. At that time Shazam’s name is Captain Marvel. When Marvel copyrighted their name, DC changed captain marvels name to Shazam.

Part of DCEU

About this bit Producer Gracia said, “Shazam! Is to live in the same world [as the other films] but we have incredible autonomy over this brand and franchise. We are working with a different team, different producers, directors… it’s a different set-up. We don’t feel fettered by or constrained by, the successes or failures and challenges of the other projects. That was a key component to our participation — that we are able to control the tone and the voice and do it the way we want to. We’re getting [script] drafts in… it’s important to make sure we get the tone right for Black Adam, which is Dwayne’s part. We don’t mind taking our time. We’re being very careful with each act and scene to go back and layer in as much as possible.” So we will hopefully see him in next Justice League movie.
