In the history of Batman’s career, the hero has garnered enough hate to last one person more than two lifetimes. Gotham City is crowded with criminals and villains who may want to do harm to the hero, and a few superheroes may also be a part of that group as well. But the Dark Knight has soldiered on and stood for everything he believed in come rain or snow. Batman’s entry into DCEU came with enough excess baggage but one person was always there to catch him at his weakest.
Alfred Pennyworth, the trusted butler of Bruce Wayne/Batman has been the unseen figure behind the shadow figure. Alfred, the father figure, and the confidante were featured in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice along with a more mature Batman. Jeremy Irons who plays Alfred will make a return along with his master in Justice League. But will the gentlemen have some exciting moments with Batman’s new teammates?
During his interview with ComingSoon.net, Irons discussed how Alfred would never change no matter the circumstances:
“Alfred is a stickler for staying the same. He tries to modulate everybody else. In a very gentle, English way he tries to deal with these people who can do all these extraordinary things in a very calm way, a very grounded way. He does not modulate at all. He sometimes lets Bruce Wayne out a bit on the lead, but he’s still attached.”
Past depictions of the beloved butler have always shown him as a cool, calm and collected. The animated Justice League series showed how Alfred remained unwavering even in the presence of the mightiest heroes, even consoling Hawkgirl with her struggles.
In the Chris Nolan Batman series, Alfred became the heart and conscious of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Batman’s farewell in the Dark knight Rises, for instance, was everything that Alfred had dreamed of for his tortured master. Jeremy Iron’s iteration of Alfred in BvS is more sarcastic than humble, giving a very dry sense of English humor that audiences may not have known Alfred to have.
