Disney Studios has been having a good year. The calculated move of acquiescing powerhouses like Pixar, Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Lucas Films into their fold has helped Disney to break its own global record. Disney has been known to give powerhouse promotion for its films, and it helps the aquirees that it stays on its lane creatively.
MCU’s Captain America Civil War was the biggest money maker for Disney. It raked in over $1.153 Billion worldwide, with Zootopia following with $1.023 Billion and Finding Dory with $1.021 Billion. Films like The Jungle Book ($966 M), and box-office duds such as Alice Through the Looking Glass ($299 M), The BFG ($242 M), The Finest Hours ($52 M), and Pete’s Dragon ($139 M) were also payoffs for Disney.
Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn issued a statement to commemorate the achievement:
“For the second year in a row, the Walt Disney Studios has reached a new high at the box office thanks to an absolutely stellar collection of releases from Disney, Disney Animation, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm. This success is a testament to the refined talent and innovative work the entire studio team puts into making these world-class cinematic experiences.”
MCU’s Doctor Strange has been expected to bring in a pretty penny as the movie has already made $86 million from overseas openings. The new Disney animation Moana and Lucas Film’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story are also predicted to be huge blockbusters. All three studios have a dedicated fan following who have supported the studios with their previous releases.
These films may help Disney in breaking Universal Studio’s all-time record from 2015. Universal made over $6.89 Billion with films such as Jurassic World and Furious 7. Jurassic World had made over $1.67 Billion and helped Universal bring in a new worldwide record.
